Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness and democratic governance, declaring that no political party will be barred from using public facilities across the state.
Addressing recent controversy surrounding the use of Mapo Hall Ibadan, the governor stated that public assets belong strictly to the citizens and must be administered without partisan bias or administrative roadblocks.
Governor Makinde made his position explicit following growing concerns over access to government venues ahead of the upcoming election season. His intervention comes directly after reports emerged regarding the proposed venue application by rival politicians for an upcoming APC presidential campaign rally.
Speaking through a press statement released on Tuesday, the governor noted that democracy functions best when every legitimate political group enjoys equal opportunity to engage voters within the boundaries of the law.
Public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations,” the governor stated.
He explained that clear regulations govern government properties to ensure public safety, proper maintenance, and order. He added that any organisation that meets these requirements will receive approval without discrimination.
“The Governor maintained that his administration remains committed to creating a level-playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of party affiliation, stressing that democracy thrives when all parties are given equal opportunities to engage with the electorate within the framework of the law.”
The management of historic state monuments like Mapo Hall has frequently ignited political friction during election cycles in Oyo State. Previous administrations often blocked opposition parties from renting municipal halls or hosting political rallies in state-owned arenas. However, the current government insists it is breaking away from those divisive political tactics.
Makinde urged political actors across the state to maintain peace, act responsibly, and follow established venue application procedures. He also directed state officers to process all venue requests professionally, fairly, and without political bias.
“Governor Makinde further urged all political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly, while calling on relevant authorities to ensure that administrative processes relating to the use of public facilities are handled professionally, fairly, and without bias,” the statement read.
The Oyo State Government emphasised that its goal remains to build political tolerance and uphold democratic freedoms. By guaranteeing open access to state infrastructure, the administration aims to foster a level playing field where all political parties can operate freely under the law.
