A sociopolitical group, Ekiti Rescue Team (ETR), has commended the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for honouring the presumed winner of the June 12th, 1993 cancelled elections, late Chief MKO Abiola; his running mate, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, and the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), and posthumously awarding them with GCRF and GCON, respectively.
“Honouring these great men, who sacrificially fought for the return to democratic rule in Nigeria, is a good development, a good step in the right direction. The patriots were long due for the recognition and award, which they respectively well-deserve. This is what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could not do in its 16 years in government,” ERT said in a statement, signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Femi Adewumi.
Recall that the Federal Government Wednesday, instead of May 29 every year, declared June 12 as Democracy Day, through a release personally signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group, while reiterating it’s commitment to supporting every course directed at ensuring development in every state and sector in the country, called on every stakeholder in the July 14 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State to put the corporate interest of the state above their personal interest and self aggrandisement.
“While we throw our weight behind the candidature of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Kayode Fayemi, we enjoin the good people of Ekiti not to succumb to any threat from any quarter and go our en mass to vote the best candidate for the job.
“Our support for Dr. Fayemi is based on his achievements – human, infrastructure and economic – during his first term in office, and the need to rescue Ekiti State from impunity and bad governance of the Ayodele Fayose-led administration and his protégé, Prof. Kolapo Olusola,” the group added.
