There is a fresh brewing in Edo State as the candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP) at the just concluded election, as Peters Osawaru Omoragbon, has called for the annulment of the guber poll.
The Edo election was held on Saturday, September 19, across all the 18 local government areas in the state with the electorate coming out en mass to determine their fate for another four years.
This publication reported that Governor Godwin Obaseki comfortably sailed to the shore of victory as he defeated All progressives Congress (APC)’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu and 12 other candidates.
Governor Obaseki was declared the winner of the anticipated poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), having met all requirements by polling 307,955 and winning 13 local government areas.
Prominent Nigerians including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Dele Momodu, and former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan have described Obaseki’s victory as a win for democracy and an end to political godfatherism.
In what came like a shock, Omoragbon urged INEC to cancel the election over what he termed as the illegal exclusion of his party’s logo and name on the ballot by the electoral commission.
INEC had in February axed out 74 political parties — among which was the NCP — even though there is still a continued legal tussle over the commission’s action with two appeal courts issuing conflicting judgments on the deregistration.
Omoragbon urged Governor Obaseki to honourably resign instead of being sacked by the court and made to face the possibility of a two-year jail term for breaching the electoral act.
