The Oyo State House of Assembly has directed its Standing Committee on Tertiary Institutions to liaise with the management of higher schools across the state and deliberate on measures to adopt online studies in these institutions.
The directive was issued following a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Oyo East and West State Constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Olorunpoto Rahman, during Thursday’s plenary.
Presenting the motion, “Need for More Intensified Efforts to Institutionalise Education Technology or Online Education System by the Management of All State-Owned Tertiary Institutions in the State to Expand Access to Education and Increase Internally Generated Revenue,” Hon. Olorunpoto noted that this new era of digital transformation calls for technologically based educational systems to enhance an effective and dynamic learning environment that prepares students for success in the twenty-first century.
“The online learning platform and virtual classroom empower learners for the future and provide personalised experiences that cater for individual needs and learning styles. It has become pronounced in the modern world, especially in educational institutions, due to rising needs and the emergence of some health challenges experienced in the recent past,” the lawmaker added.
Hon. Olorunpoto stressed that the introduction of online courses or programmes by some institutions in Nigeria has helped to increase their students’ database and create more access to education degrees and master’s and doctorate programmes, especially for working adults.
He stressed further that the adoption of an online educational system by state-owned tertiary institutions can also pave the way for an increase in internally generated revenue and bring rapid developments to the state.
However, the House has urged the Executive Arm of Government to implore the heads and management of all state-owned tertiary institutions in Oyo State to create an enabling environment and capacity building on technology for their workforce to bridge the personnel gaps in technology education system initiatives.
Meanwhile, the bills seeking the establishment of the Tertiary Education Commission and Abiola Ajimobi First Technical University, Ibadan, passed through the first reading stage at Thursday’s plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
The House has adjourned its plenary sitting till Tuesday, March 12, 2024.”
