As Mentcoom Cinemas debuts at the Obafemi Awolowo Civic and Convention Centre, Fajuyi, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, it is imperative for me to elucidate the import of this entertainment sites to the state.
One point must be made clear at this juncture, Ekiti has been blessed with a Cinema – Eki Cinema – before the creation of the state, when it was part of the Old Ondo State.

However, just before the creation of Ekiti State, Eki Cinema collapsed and the distinguished Ekiti man who was keeping the semblance of Cinema in the state then joined politics and later became the Speaker of Ekiti House of Assembly, the Late Rt. Hon. Akinyemi.

So it is a landmark development that Ekiti State, Nigeria is poised to welcome its first cinema on Saturday 25 May, 2024.
It is marking a significant milestone in the state’s tourism, entertainment ,social, and economic journey.

This pivotal moment not only signals a new era of entertainment for residents but also holds tremendous promise for the growth and development of tourism in the state.

Cinema, often regarded as the mirror of society, has the unique ability to capture the essence of a place, its people, and its culture, and project it onto the big screen. For Ekiti State, this means an opportunity to showcase its rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant community life to a broader audience, both domestically and internationally.

One of the most compelling ways cinema fuels tourism is by serving as a powerful marketing tool. Through captivating films shot on location in the state, audiences around the world are transported to its picturesque towns, verdant forests, and cascading waterfalls. This exposure not only piques curiosity but also inspires travellers to experience these wonders firsthand, driving footfall to the region.

Furthermore, the presence of a cinema offers more than just entertainment; it fosters a sense of community and social cohesion. As locals gather to enjoy the latest blockbusters or indie gems, they forge connections, share experiences, and create memories together. This sense of camaraderie extends beyond the theatre walls and spills over into the streets, restaurants, and tourist attractions, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Moreover, the establishment of a cinema can act as a catalyst for infrastructural development in Ekiti State. With increased tourist influx, there arises a demand for amenities such as hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and recreational facilities. This, in turn, stimulates investment, job creation, and economic growth, ultimately benefiting the entire community.

It’s worth noting that cinema doesn’t just attract tourists; it also cultivates local talent and creativity. Aspiring filmmakers, actors, and artists in the state now have a platform to showcase their work, tell their stories, and contribute to the cultural tapestry of the region. This burgeoning film industry not only adds to the state’s allure but also generates revenue and employment opportunities for its residents.

However, with great potential comes the responsibility to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth. As Ekiti State embraces cinema as a driver of tourism, it must prioritize preservation, conservation, and community engagement. Sustainable tourism practices, environmental protection measures, and cultural heritage preservation efforts are essential to safeguarding the integrity and authenticity of the destination for future generations.

In conclusion, the impending opening of the first cinema in Ekiti State heralds a new chapter in the state’s tourism narrative.

With cinema as a catalyst, Ekiti stands poised to captivate hearts, stimulate economies, and leave an indelible mark on the global tourism map.

As the curtains rise on this exciting venture brought by a UK based Igede Ekiti product, Olaniyi Fatoyinbo, President Mentcoom all eyes are on Ekiti State, eagerly anticipating the magic that unfolds on and off the silver screen.
God bless Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for creating an enabling environment for the blossoming of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial spirit.
Congratulations, Ekiti State
