A Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, reactivated the bilateral air service agreement (BASA) Nigeria signed with the United Kingdom and began a direct flight between Lagos and London.
The airline revealed plans to operate direct flights to London on March 30 during a prelaunch meeting in February, and the service began a month later.
In November, Allen Onyema, Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, stated that the airline had successfully secured both the Foreign Carrier Operator Permit and the Third Country Operator Permit.
This means it is authorised to fly flights to Europe and the United Kingdom.
On Saturday, the development was announced via the Air Peace X handle.
The airline stated, “London service has begun, and we’re delighted to have accomplished yet another feat in our drive to provide peaceful connectivity across cities.”
“A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this launch.”
Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and Doris Uzoka-Anita, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, attended the inaugural trip to London.
Amidst widespread plaudits and jubilation, Air Peace’s inaugural flight touched down at London Gatwick, and the federal government supported the airline.
Med-View Airline, which last operated the route, suspended its operation in April 2018.
However, Air Peace’s entry into the route has crashed fares even as the federal government vowed to give the airline all the support it needs to survive.
