THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has joined some other Nigerians to condemn the Weekend’s invasion and subsequent arrests of Federal Judges by personnel of the Department of State Services, DSS, saying it does not paint the image of the country in good light.
NANS in a statement by its President, Comrade Chinedu Obasi (aka IBB), said “It is at best an overreach on another arm of government. This is regarded as a clear case of arbitrariness that is capable of eroding the democratic tenets that was encapsulated in the doctrine of separation of power.”
Obasi, however, berated the Federal Government for deciding to mobilize only about 25 per cent of thousands of students graduating in the various higher institutions for the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps.
He said that the graduating students from higher institutions that would not be mobilized would be rendered idle for one whole year while remaining unemployable (where vacancies may exist) due to inability to produce their NYSC certificates.
Obasi said: “More importantly, the Federal Government should hasten the implementation of the abolition of the dichotomy which has existed ingloriously between HND and the B.Sc holders. The discrimination that has existed over years is seriously bringing setback into our education sector since what is good for goose is also deemed good for the gander. Obasi said.
“We seriously admonish the government to look into these two issues as a matter of urgency in order to salvage our education system and bring back equity and sanity back to the civil service.
“Government should endeavour not to expose Nigerian Students to unnecessary hardship, as there is urgent need to set the economy back on the path of recovery.”
