The former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has again reacted over the killings of #EndSARS protesters in some states of the federation.

The PDP leader while reacting to the killing of a protester in Lagos on Monday, October 12, described the disbandment of the SARS as a welcome development.

Speaking in an interview with the Channels TV on Monday, Atiku said it was wrong for the police to face unarmed civilians in a democratic setting with guns, stressing that operatives of the disbanded SARS were not doing what they were trained to do.

He said: “I have issued a statement supporting the reform of the police and of course also the disbanding of the SARS. I was trained by the police and I know the kind of job they are doing now, it is not the kind of job they were trained to do actually.

“You cannot face unarmed civilians in a democracy with guns. Do you ever see such in any part of the world? Only in this country, so it is totally unacceptable. Well, there is a need for them to reform the police actually to make it more civil.”

Also in his comment on the protests against the SARS, a former governor of Niger state, Babangida Aliyu, said that all institutions in Nigeria must be reformed to ensure better service delivery to the people.

He added that Nigerians have realised the best way to make the government do what they want and how they want it to be done.

The former governor said: “Every institution in Nigeria needs reform, from the civil service to the police, even to the military. In other words, we should pay attention to what is happening in all these institutions. I am happy that Nigerians have begun now to realise what they can do to make the government do what they want the government to do.”
