A distinguished team of archaeologists and researchers has descended upon Aramoko-Ekiti to launch a critical heritage investigation into potential historic earthworks hidden beneath the soil.

Working alongside the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, experts aim to establish whether these mysterious ground formations hold the key to uncovering ancient settlement patterns while boosting regional Ekiti State tourism development.

The field delegation features notable specialists, including Mr A. Uranta Opuada and Dr Opajide Segun from the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City, alongside Mr Bamidele Joseph representing the Ekiti Biodiversity Survey Project. Together, they are conducting physical ground-truthing to verify features originally spotted via satellite imagery.

Community Stakeholders Power Aramoko-Ekiti Historic Earthworks Probe

Fieldwork begins officially on Tuesday, 18 August 2026. The visiting team will pay an initial courtesy call to Regent Sherifat Adeyemi Owolabi in Aramoko-Ekiti. Following protocol, the researchers will consult with traditional chiefs, local elders, and key community stakeholders before embarking on the physical terrain inspections.

This boots-on-the-ground survey gives researchers a chance to cross-reference satellite observation data against physical landscape features. Crucially, it allows the team to gather oral histories straight from the community custodians, helping them decide if full-scale excavation is justified.

Advancing West African Archaeology and Cultural Preservation

Reflecting on the mission, the Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Wale Ojo-Lanre, Esq., framed the initiative as a decisive step toward unlocking hidden history. He noted that the state’s true destination value goes far beyond iconic waterfalls, scenic mountains, and traditional festivals.

”This is essentially a preliminary heritage investigation,” Ojo-Lanre explained. “We are not jumping to conclusions or proclaiming an archaeological discovery before scientific verification. What we have is an indication from experts that certain formations around Aramoko deserve closer professional examination. The responsible thing to do is to bring the experts to the ground, engage the custodians of the community’s history and allow science, archaeology and indigenous knowledge to guide us.”

He stressed that if these preliminary checks confirm the sites are historically significant, Aramoko could instantly emerge as a premier hub for educational, research, and heritage travel across Nigeria.

Strategic Alignment with Regional Heritage Investigation Goals

This archaeological survey aligns directly with the vision of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s administration. By identifying and conserving natural, historical, and creative assets, the state aims to diversify its economy and build long-term sustainability.

Properly documented archaeological sites unlock substantial socio-economic opportunities. A validated site can drive academic research, fuel educational field trips, create local tour-guiding jobs, and stimulate hospitality enterprises across the local district.

However, state officials emphasize that long-term success depends heavily on active local participation. Traditional leaders, elders, and local historians hold invaluable oral traditions that help explain the origin, function, and socio-cultural context of the subterranean structures.

Following this initial reconnaissance, the specialist team will issue formal advice on next steps. Future work may involve detailed geophysical mapping, systematically recording oral traditions, and conducting formal conservation assessments under national regulatory guidelines.

For Ekiti State, probing what lies beneath Aramoko’s soil represents far more than finding another landmark. It marks the opening chapter of an ambitious effort to safeguard West African history, honor ancestral civilisations, and build a resilient cultural tourism economy for generations to come.
