THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, Tuesday commissioned the Nigeria Police Mortgage Bank and cash center at the Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Speaking at the occasion, the IGP urged the management and staff of the bank to offers the officers and men of the Police Force with consumer loans at interest free rates much lower than what obtained in commercial banks.
Idris said the mortgage bank commenced business in 2015 to cater for the welfare needs of Police officers especially in the provision of mortgage loans for affordable and quality housing.
The Police boss further said that the approach became pertinent in keeping with prevailing global practice of encouraging owner-occupier housing schemes among members of law enforcement organisations.
He said that it was a veritable platform to provide Police officers unhindered access to the National Housing Fund scheme of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria.
He also added that the Nigerian Police is the highest contributor to the mortgage industry with over ten billion naira in remittances since inception of the scheme.
The Police boss stressed the need for accountability in the management of all Police investments especially in the provision of quality and affordable housing in the country.
In his own remarks, the Chairman of the Board of the bank, DIG Una Bala Ringim (rtd), said that the bank would ensure easy access to loan for housing purposes for both officers and men as well as the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force.
