A 12-year-old Nigerian girl, Fathia Abdullahi, has gained international attention after developing a laundry-folding robot that folds clothing in “three seconds”—only a year after she began coding.
According to Reuters, the young programmer began coding when he was 11 years old.
Fathia also stated that she created the prototype robot to fold T-shirts on weekends because “there are too many clothes to fold.”
She expects to accomplish much more with her talent if she achieves her goal of becoming a food scientist shortly.
“I made the T-shirt folder because there are too many clothes to fold on Saturdays and Sundays when you wash a lot. I made it using some pins, some beams, and an EV3 brick,” Fathia said while responding to questions about her innovation’s motivation.
“I started coding at the age of 11. I decided to build the robot because that’s our problem at home. We wash clothes, and there are always lots of T-shirts to fold.
“I’d love to be a food scientist when I grow up. I’ll be able to use coding to build many things that would help me.”
Although the robot was only a prototype, the gifted programmer said she aimed to develop the technology for sale in the local market.
On the other hand, Fathia is not the only one who has used her coding skills to make regular housework easier.
Oluwatobiloba Owolola, also 12, programmed a robot grabber that detects adjacent objects and transports them to a more desired area. In a similar effort to “make daily tasks easier,” the grabber detects adjacent objects and transports them to a more desired area.
Because of his former interest in and fondness for coding, the little boy stated that he hopes to pursue a career in robotics engineering.
“This is the robot grabber. I programmed it to identify the object, grab it, and take it to another position. I started coding when I was ten. I found Lego Robotics interesting and wanted to do it all through,” Oluwatobiloba said.
