The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly announced that a former Barcelona player, Emmanuel Amuneke, will be the next head coach of the Super Eagles. Jose Peseiro resigned from his position in February.
After weeks of reviewing applications from international and domestic coaches, the NFF is said to have chosen Amuneke, who won the FIFA U17 World Cup with Nigeria’s U17 team.
According to reports, the NFF hired an Indigenous coach named Amuneke because it could not afford to pay a foreign manager.
The NFF is anticipated to make an official statement on the selection of the next head coach of the Super Eagles.
One of Peseiro’s assistants, George Finidi, who is currently the manager of Enyimba FC, will continue to serve in that capacity.
The former Zamalek and Sporting Lisbon winger, well-known for his coaching abilities, was successful with the Golden Eaglets and helped the Nigeria U17 national side win the FIFA U17 World Cup.
As the coach of Tanzania’s national team, he left a lasting impression, leading the Taifa Stars to their first Africa Cup of Nations qualification in nearly 40 years.
Amuneke’s coaching record with Misr Lel Makkasa of Egypt and Zanaco of Zambia was criticised despite his accomplishments. However, during his tenure with the Flying Eagles, the group could not secure a spot in the 2017 U20 AFCON.
As the Golden Eaglets coach, the 53-year-old tactician and 1996 Atlanta gold medalist encountered Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze.
Amuneke is a former assistant coach for the Super Eagles and a member of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning team.
