Joint security forces in South-Eastern Nigeria have successfully rescued ten passengers, including several NYSC Corps Members, following an early morning highway ambush along a major transit corridor.
Tactical teams, working alongside sister security units, intercepted the attackers shortly after the incident and rescued in Imo State ten victims while securing the commercial vehicles involved in the travel incident.
The violent interception occurred at roughly 6:30 a.m. on October 1, 2026, when heavily armed assailants targeted two commercial transit buses. The vehicles were transporting youth corps members and civilian travelers from Ibadan, Oyo State, toward Bende in Abia State and Uyo in Akwa Ibom State. Gunmen forced both vehicles to stop near the state border, attempting a mass abduction before security patrols responded.
Rapid Security Response to Owerri Onitsha Expressway Attack
Police units deployed rapidly to the sector after receiving emergency distress transmissions from local commuters. Multi-agency tactical teams established perimeter controls and pursued the armed group into the surrounding vegetation to prevent them from moving deeper into the forest.
Speaking on the tactical intervention, Imo State Police Command spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye confirmed the recovery of the commercial buses and early operational progress:
“Following a swift response by the police and other security agencies, both buses were recovered, while 10 victims were rescued at the scene,” he said.
Okoye confirmed that the rescued travelers are currently in safe custody and receiving medical evaluation alongside necessary support services. However, authorities maintain that operational verification continues as search teams track remaining suspects through the surrounding terrain.
Imo Police Command Rescue Operation Intensifies
Senior officers have moved directly to the sector to direct search units and oversee ground intelligence operations. Law enforcement leadership has committed additional tracking personnel and mobile assets to ensure every missing passenger is located safely.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, alongside other Service Commanders, has visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and to give operational direction, with an assurance that the command will sustain the operation until all victims are safely recovered and the suspects are brought to justice,” Okoye said.
The police spokesperson clarified that the exact number of individuals taken during the initial ambush remains under verification, promising full public updates as field units cross-reference passenger manifests.
Direct Coordination for Affected NYSC Corps Members
State police headquarters confirmed active communication lines are open with national youth service officials to handle family notifications responsibly and prevent panic.
He added that the command was working with the NYSC Directorate to reach the families of the affected corps members, who would be kept informed as the situation developed.
Travelers along the interstate corridor faced brief disruptions during the initial security sweep. However, police forces cleared the area shortly after the rescue intervention, restoring normal transit while maintaining a heightened patrol presence.
Meanwhile, Okoye said the affected section of the expressway had been reopened and traffic was flowing, while security personnel remained deployed to protect commuters.
The command appealed for calm and urged members of the public to remain vigilant, calling on anyone with credible information to report to the nearest police station or contact the command’s emergency lines.
