POLICE have arrested Jerry Ehiwario, the Special Assistant to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Students’ Affairs, with an AK-47 gun in Warri.

SaharaReporters reports that the governor’s aide was arrested on Saturday afternoon with his boys at the premises of Dom Domingos College, Warri, during the state’s students’ election.

One of the students who witnessed the incident, said: “Mr. Ehiwario had gone to the premises with his boys to try and influence the state’s students’ election that was taking place, in favour of his unpopular candidate from Ika, the governor’s place, but met stiff resistance from the supporters of the popular candidate.

“Fight broke out and the police were called in. In the course of bringing order to the venue, a battle axe was seen with one of Ehiwairo’s boys, Pedro Chibuzo, Obi Ogume. This prompted the police to thoroughly search the cars in the premises. In that process, an AK-47 was found in the car boot of the SA to Okowa, Mr. Jerry Ehiwario.

It was gathered that Ehiwario and some of his boys and the vehicle were taken to the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Warri, where they were said to have been detained.

A source, who confided in our correspondent, however expressed fears that nothing would come out of the arrest, as a result of the relationship between the state police commissioner and the state governor.

“I am very sceptical about anything coming out of the arrest. Nothing will happen to the governor’s SA and his boys that were arrested by the police. They will be released immediately because the Police Commissioner is very close to Governor Okowa, and even some of the governor’s boys. So, don’t expect anything from the arrest.

“Do you know that recently, the Commissioner of Police was at a church service and reception of one of Governor Okowa’s very junior protocol officers, at Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South Local Government Area. That is the closeness I am talking about; so, nothing will happen to the governor’s SA and his boys that were arrest following the AK-47 gun that was recovered in the SA’s vehicle. Just watch and see.” the source said.

When contacted, state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Mustafa, confirmed the arrest, saying “I am not aware of any weapon, but I know some persons were arrested and are being detained at the ‘B’ Division, Warri.”
