A popular Nigerian Juju musician, Saint Janet, has died in Lagos following a brief illness, colleagues confirmed on Sunday.

The announcement of Saint Janet’s death on Sunday marked the sudden loss of one of West Africa’s most provocative performers. Her passing deprives the country’s live performance circuit of a singularly direct, unfiltered voice.

Socialite and media publisher Otunba Femi Davies confirmed the news via a statement on his verified Facebook account. He noted that the veteran artist passed away on Saturday following a sudden turn in her health.

St Janet (Iyun Janet Ajilore), a popular Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician known for her vibrant live performances, energetic stage presence and socially unfiltered party tracks, is dead. She died after a brief illness on Saturday.”

Tributes quickly mounted across social channels as fans and fellow artists gathered to mark her passing. Colleagues remembered her as a fearless entertainer who refused to dilute her creative expression to suit conventional broadcast standards.

Born Iyun Janet Ajilore, the singer carved out a distinct niche within a genre historically dominated by male bandleaders. She led her ensemble through long live sets that blended classical Juju rhythms with modern electronic instrumentation.

Saint Janet Death Highlights Shift in Nigerian Highlife Music

The broader impact of her career extends beyond mere stagecraft. For decades, traditional Juju and Nigerian Highlife music relied on polished, moralistic storytelling tailored for family gatherings and elite patronage.

She disrupted that traditional template entirely. By injecting raw street vernacular, cheeky satire, and explicit social commentary into her tracks, she created a distinct sub-genre that captured the raucous energy of nightlife across southern Nigeria.

This stylistic shift earned her both fierce criticism from conservative commentators and devout admiration from working-class partygoers. While mainstream radio stations frequently hesitated to broadcast her uncensored tracks, her bootleg recordings and live concert bootlegs circulated widely throughout the West African diaspora.

Her commercial success proved that independent artists could build lucrative careers outside conventional corporate record labels. She built a sustainable business model entirely on private bookings, international tours, and direct fan support.

Cultural Legacy and the Battle for Creative Autonomy

Her rise challenged long-held industry assumptions about gender roles within indigenous West African music genres. Female singers in the region were frequently confined to backing vocals or gospel groups.

She asserted total control over her live band, managing complex business logistics and demanding equal pay alongside top male contemporaries. Her command of the stage set a new precedent for female bandleaders across the continent.

Observers note that her artistic choices reflected a wider cultural tension between traditional modesty and modern individualism in urban Nigeria. Her compositions stripped away pretentious double entendres, replacing them with direct observations of everyday social interactions, romance, and economic hardship.

Industry analysts emphasise that her body of work preserved key rhythmic structures of traditional Highlife while adapting the lyrical content for younger generations. This hybrid approach ensured that classical percussion instruments remained central to contemporary dance floors.

The singer leaves behind an extensive discography spanning dozens of live concert albums and studio releases. Funeral arrangements and public memorial services will be announced by the Ajilore family in the coming days.
