International retail brand Sinomart Superstore has suffered severe embarrassing disruptions at its newly launched Ibadan facility after torrential downpours caused the main shopping hall’s roof to leak profusely on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred just days after the large-format retail chain celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, 5 September. Located at The Palms Shopping Mall along Ring Road/MKO Abiola Way—occupying the former Shoprite space and adjacent units—the store was filled with shoppers when the sudden deluge exposed major structural flaws.
Water Gushes Across Exclusive Shopping Hall
PMParrot reports eyewitness accounts revealed that customers were forced to dodge at least six distinct spots where rainwater was gushing directly into the exclusive shopping hall.
The flooding affected multiple sections of the massive retail outlet, which houses groceries, household essentials, electronics, kitchen appliances, furniture, fashion items, and mobile accessories. Disgruntled patrons expressed outrage as water pooled near high-value goods and busy aisles.
“Many customers grumbled aloud that it was not right for the management of Sinomart not to subject the roof to an integrity test before opening for business,” a source present during the incident stated. “It was an unfortunate oversight.”
Chinese Executives Scramble Emergency Repair Teams
Senior Chinese officials from Sinomart were seen personally inspecting the damage, marking the affected leaking zones across the hall, and rushing in emergency repairmen equipped with ladders.
Despite the operational chaos, commercial activity was not completely halted. Repair works were carried out concurrently with ongoing buying and selling as maintenance crews attempted to seal the breaches overhead.
