The Speaker Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Frank Okiye, representing Esan North-East constituency 2 has been impeached.
His impeachment came on Monday, October 12, during a brief plenary session of the assembly.
Okiye’s impeachment followed a motion by Henry Okhurobo the majority leader of the House and signed by nine of the members who were present at the brief sitting on Monday, October 12.
With the development, Hon. Marcus Onobu from Esan West constituency has emerged the new Speaker of the House.
This happened a few days after petitions against the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the September 19 governorship election in Edo State have risen to three from the initial one at the Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin with the likelihood of fresh election, even as some of the petitioners demand the exclusion of PDP and Obaseki.
The initial petition was from Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its governorship candidate, Iboi Emmanuel, while the two new petitions came from Action Alliance (AA) and its standard-bearer, Ukonga Onaivi, and the Action Peoples Party (APP), without joining its governorship candidate.
