The Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker yesterday cancelled its scheduled sitting following the arrest of the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Oluomo was picked up at the Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, at about 8:30 to answer questions related to alleged financial crime. It could not be ascertained whether he was on his way out of or returning to the country.
It was learnt that Speaker Oluomo may have been whisked to Abuja for further questioning at the anti-graft agency’s office.
Operatives decided to ambush him at the airport after he refused to honour several summons to respond to queries about a petition alleging financial misappropriation.
When Daily Sun visited the House of Assembly complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, it was gathered that a plenary earlier scheduled for the day was hurriedly cancelled when the news of the arrest filtered into town.
The Assembly complex, which is usually a beehive of activities, was quiet, as no member of the House was in the complex. Some legislative aides and Assembly staff were seen discussing the matter in hushed tones.
Efforts to reach Abdul Gafar, the speaker’s media aide, for comment proved abortive, as he neither picked up his calls nor returned them.
But several sources linked his arrest to a petition which detailed an alleged series of sleaze against him.
A lawmaker in the state confirmed that there had been petitions against the speaker alleging financial fraud.
