A brilliant 15-year-old Nigerian kid, Victor Olatunji, has emerged as Africa’s mathematics champion after beating 10,000 other contestants on the continent.
Victor Olatunji is a student at the International School in Ibadan, Oyo State, West Africa. For his feat, he earned $5,000 (over N2 million) in university scholarships from the just-concluded Cruxlearning Mathematics Contest Africa.
The Cruxlearning Mathematics Contest Africa (CLMCA) is a pan-African competition. Over 10,000 SS2 students from 24 African countries registered for the annual contest through the online platform where qualifying exams were conducted.
Out of the 10,000 contestants, the top 18 were shortlisted for the second stage of the reality TV quiz show, designed to demystify mathematics and identify and reward outstanding students for their brilliance in the subject and social skills.
After four weeks in the Mathslounge, an area designed to host the contest, the contestants were shortlisted to remain six, who then went ahead for the final encounter with the Dean to determine Africa’s Math Champion.
Victor Adetunji (known as Root) of The International School Ibadan finally emerged as the best and got $5,000 worth of university scholarships. He was followed by Femi Ositade (Alpha) of The Ambassadors College, Ota, who came in second and won $2,500.
In third place is Joyce (known as Curve) Onubogu of British Spring College, Awka, who won $1,500 in scholarships.
These three brilliant SS2 students won scholarship awards of different magnitudes.
Crux Learning has refused my son, Victor Adetunji, the scholarship, they want to pay the USD at a rate of 412 naira per dollar. Their initial promise was to remit the scholarship fund at the prevailing dollar rate in the country. We wrote to them when the boy got admission to the university, but they have reneged on their promises. They might be scamming the innocent, brilliant children. Please help us make this viral.
