The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) operatives.
Emefiele was arrested by the security agencies on Friday evening, shortly after President Bola Tinubu suspended him.
The president had directed that the suspension of Emefiele was with immediate effect.
He was further instructed to hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN Governor, pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced in a press release that Emefiele’s appointment as CBN Governor has been suspended.
As stated in the release, Emefiele’s indefinite suspension followed an ongoing investigation of his office and planned reforms in the economy’s financial sector.
The Director of Information, Willie Bassey, signed the three-paragraphed release, dated 9 June 2023, for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.
“This is the sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms,” stated the release.
