Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Edin Dzeko has confirmed his upcoming edin dzeko retirement from international duty, announcing he will feature in his final match for his country against Sweden on October 2.

The 40-year-old center-forward, who currently leads the front line for German Bundesliga side Schalke 04, will step down following their UEFA Nations League encounter in Zenica, concluding a monumental 19-year senior international career.

Dzeko earned his first senior cap for Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2007 against Turkey. Across nearly two decades in the national setup, the tall striker established himself as the iconic figurehead of his nation’s footballing identity, generating 151 caps and scoring a record 73 goals. His leadership on the pitch steered Bosnia to their historic debut appearance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, as well as a memorable knockout run to the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

According to ongoing tactical analysis by Reporters At Large, Dzeko’s elite aerial dominance and hold-up play provided the structural foundation for Bosnia’s attack through two distinct competitive cycles. His longevity at both international and European club levels underscores his status as one of modern football’s most durable and prolific target men.

Why Edin Dzeko Decided to Retire from International Football

Addressing the timing of his decision, the Sarajevo native explained that reaching 40 years of age signaled the natural moment to transition out of international play and make way for his nation’s next generation of attackers.

“Nothing in my career has ever compared to the pride I have felt every single time I wore that shirt. Nothing,” said Dzeko in an official statement published on social media. “It was my childhood dream, a dream I carried with me on each of the 151 occasions I had the honour of representing my country on a football pitch. Now I feel the time has come to step aside. If I have made it to the age of 40 with the national team, it is because I truly gave everything I had.

Dzeko called upon the Bosnian faithful to gather at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica for his international send-off.

“For now, I just hope you will be there that night against Sweden, so we can share one more emotion,” added Dzeko. “And that is how I want to experience my final night representing my country: with all of you by my side, wearing the shirt I have loved since I was a boy.”

A Career Record That Rewrote Bosnia’s Football History

Dzeko departs the international arena as Bosnia’s undisputed leader in every major offensive metric, holding comfortable cushions in both total appearances and career goals scored.
