Canada will increase the amount of money foreign applicants must demonstrate for living expenses when securing international student permits, tightening the benchmark under updated Canada study permit financial requirements starting 1 September 2026.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed in a statement on X on Friday that a single student applying from outside Quebec will now need to prove access to C23,448 for living costs. This marks an uptick from the C22,895 required under current rules—a rise of C$553, or roughly 2.4 per cent.

IRCC Proof of Funds 2026: What Overseas Applicants Must Show

This mandatory baseline operates strictly apart from university tuition fees and travel charges. Overseas candidates must show they hold enough money to cover all day-to-day living costs for themselves as well as any relatives joining them on their journey.

For scholars migrating alongside dependants, the compulsory thresholds scale upward according to total household size:

  • Single Applicant: C$23,448
  • Family of Three: C$35,888
  • Family of Five: C$49,419
  • Family of Six: C$55,736
  • Family of Seven: C$62,054

For every extra dependant exceeding seven people, candidates must add another C$6,318 to their verified living reserves.

Federal migration authorities review these statutory limits every year to keep pace with changing consumer costs across the country. Officials stress that maintaining realistic financial baselines helps shield foreign scholars from severe hardship and predatory practices while studying.

As part of the clearance process for international student permits, applicants must prove they can pay for tuition, living costs, and return transit without hardship. Anyone enrolling in degree courses longer than twelve months must also set out a clear financial plan showing how they will cover their remaining years of study.

The revised threshold takes effect for all formal study applications filed on or after 1 September 2026.
