In a significant move to combat the rising cases of gender-based violence in Oyo State, the Centre for Comprehensive Promotion of Reproductive Health (CCPRH) recently organised a three-day training programme for security personnel and Gender Desk Officers.

The event, which took place from December 11 to 13, 2024, was sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Oyo State Government.

The training focused on enhancing the capacity of law enforcement officers to handle cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) effectively. Participants were educated on the provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, forensic investigation techniques, and the importance of maintaining confidentiality when dealing with survivors.

Barrister Modupe Helen Awosemusi, a trainer at the event, emphasised the need for a trauma-informed approach to interacting with survivors. She stressed that responders should be empathetic, avoid judgement, and prioritise the safety and well-being of survivors.

Another trainer, Mrs. Olafunmilayo Akinpelu, highlighted the importance of understanding the root causes of SGBV, its consequences, and the mistakes to avoid when handling cases. She also emphasised the need for responders to prioritise their mental health and seek support when needed.

Top Gender Desk Officers, including Funke Ayenigbara, Funmi Akinsanya, Officer Afe, and Officer Ayiti, attended the training program. The CCPRH Senior Programs Director, Mrs. Tolu Babawarun, stressed the need for continuous engagement with law enforcement personnel to ensure the effective implementation of the project and the total eradication of female genital mutilation.

The event marked a significant step towards addressing the scourge of gender-based violence in Oyo State, and it is hoped that the training will have a positive impact on the lives of survivors and the broader community.
