As hikers made their way along the scenic trails of the event, they were greeted by lush greenery and panoramic views, culminating in the natural amphitheatre on Oke Sagbonke. The serene atmosphere provided an ideal backdrop for attendees to connect with both nature and one another.

Early arrivals trekked for over an hour through a misty, cloud-covered trail to reach the natural amphitheatre atop Oke Sagun. There, visitors gathered to enjoy talks, music, dance, and fine wine—all surrounded by the scenic beauty of Ekiti’s mountainous landscape.

Governor Oyebanji’s Commitment to Tourism Development

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Abiodun Oyebanji, who graced the occasion with top government officials and supporters, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the state’s tourism destinations into world-class attractions.

He directed the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, Investment and Cooperatives, the Commissioner for Arts and Culture, as well as the Director-General, Bureau of Tourism Development, to develop a comprehensive investment plan for the mountain.

While expressing optimism that Ekiti would soon take its pride of place among Nigeria’s leading tourist destinations, the Governor urged stakeholders, including investors and cultural custodians, to collaborate with his government to achieve the vision of making Ekiti a global tourism hotspot.

Governor Oyebanji then commended the Director-General of the Ekiti Bureau of Tourism Development, Wale Ojo-Lanre, for his tireless efforts in highlighting the state’s tourism potential. He also promised full government involvement in developing the Oke Sagun site, which is home to the largest pineapple plantation in Africa.

Community Involvement and Cultural Significance

Central to this event is the enthusiastic support from local communities, particularly traditional leaders who view the initiative as a means to rejuvenate cultural pride.

The traditional ruler of Efon-Alaye, Oba Emmanuel Adesanya Aladejare, led other royal fathers and community members to the summit of the mountain. While expressing his delight at hosting this year’s edition of the safari, Oba Aladejare described it as a significant boost to the cultural pride and economic potential of his domain.

In addition to the support from traditional leaders, the voice of notable community figures, such as the state’s Commissioner for Arts and Culture, Professor Rasaki Ojo-Bakare, is also paramount. In a chat with journalists, Professor Ojo-Bakare highlighted the strategic value of the mountain hike.

“Mountain hiking is one of our strengths in Ekiti. The state is blessed with numerous hills and scenic landscapes. I was especially pleased when the Governor promised to be directly involved in further developing this site. By the time we return next year, the experience will be even richer.”

Professor Ojo-Bakare also praised Amb. Ojo-Lanre for his resilience and dedication in promoting the state’s tourism assets. “With people like him leading the charge, Ekiti will truly become the tourism destination people have been waiting for.”

Strategic Vision for Sustainable Tourism in Ekiti State

Earlier in his remarks, the Director-General of the Bureau of Tourism Development, Amb. Wale Ojo-Lanre, commended the Governor for his passion, commitment, and visionary efforts in transforming the state’s tourism landscape into world-class tourist destinations and his strategic approach to harnessing the state’s unique attractions for economic growth.

Describing the state’s rich cultural heritage, natural wonders, and serene environment as unparalleled assets, the DG expressed optimism that with the Governor’s ongoing initiatives, Ekiti State would soon become a must-visit destination for travellers around the world.

Speaking on the long-term vision for the initiative, Amb. Ojo-Lanre said, “The goal is to make tourism one of the biggest sources of revenue for Ekiti. That’s why the Governor mandated our office to actively showcase and promote tourism to drive economic growth and investment in the state.”

He added that the foundation for sustainable tourism development is being laid through the creation of a tourism policy and master plan. “We cannot build something on nothing. With a clear roadmap and strategy, we are confident of achieving our goals,” he said.

As visitors danced and dined, pounded yam was served in abundance, while Rites Foods, a major sponsor of the event, ensured tourists stayed refreshed with chilled drinks. Security personnel, Red Cross officers, nurses, and other relevant agencies were present throughout the event to ensure safety and smooth operations.
