In a significant move to blend heritage with contemporary administration, Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has presented the staff and instruments of office to three new crown-wearing Royal Fathers in Ibadanland.

The Governor affirmed that his administration will ensure tradition and modern governance work hand in hand to deliver meaningful progress to the state.

Speaking on Friday at the historic Mapo Hall, Makinde maintained that the elevation of the High Chiefs and their subsequent conferment with beaded crowns speak to a tradition that evolves without losing its essence.

Makinde: Upholding the Rule of Law

Governor Makinde, represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, presented instruments of office to His Royal Majesty, Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin (Ekerin Balogun); His Royal Majesty, Oba Oyekola Babalola, SAN (Ekarun Olubadan); and His Royal Majesty, Oba Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli (Ekarun Balogun).

The Governor stated that the approval is firmly anchored in the Oyo State Chiefs Law and guided by the established customs of Ibadanland.

He noted: “This ceremony represents a deliberate affirmation of our commitment as a government to uphold the rule of law while preserving the dignity and relevance of our traditional institutions.”

The elevation aims to prevent a vacuum within the well-structured Ibadan traditional institution, which Makinde described as a “vital pillar” providing stability and identity.

A Legacy of Progress

The Governor noted that the presentation was a recognition of leadership. He urged the new Obas to lead with wisdom and integrity, stressing that their conduct would shape public confidence in the system.

“There are moments in the life of people when history, culture, and governance converge to produce an enduring legacy. Today is one of such moments,” the Governor remarked. “We are not merely gathered to witness a ceremonial rite; we are here to affirm a system that has, for generations, provided structure, order, and identity to Ibadanland.”

Support from the Olubadan-in-Council

Former Governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Rashidi Ladoja, speaking through the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, lauded the initiative.

“I want to thank the governor for doing this and for what he has been doing before now. In his time, we are more educated than before if you critically look at the issue of chieftaincy matters of Ibadan. So, we appreciate what he has been doing. So, I am happy with this development,” he said.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, added that the event marks a milestone in preserving the rich cultural heritage that defines the people of Oyo State.

He reaffirmed the government’s support for traditional rulers as critical partners in grassroots development and peacebuilding.
