Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio has commended the nation’s workforce during the May Day 2026 celebrations, praising the Nigerian National Minimum Wage progress and the enduring patriotism of citizens.
Despite the significant economic hurdles faced by many, Akpabio lauded the “resilience, hard work, and patriotism” of those serving the country. This message, aimed at bolstering workers’ welfare packages, arrived via a statement personally signed by the Senate President and released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Honourable Eseme Eyiboh.
A Tribute to the Heroes of Democracy
During the celebrations for May Day 2026, the Senate President highlighted the diverse roles that keep the nation’s heart beating. From rural farmlands to urban hospitals, Akpabio acknowledged the collective effort required to sustain the economy.
Akpabio stated: “On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the 10th Senate and chairman of the National Assembly, on behalf of the National Assembly, join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious, and patriotic Nigerian workers whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation.”
He further added: “Today, we celebrate you, the teachers who mold our future, the farmers who feed our nation, the doctors and nurses who heal our land, the artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees whose daily toil builds Nigeria. You are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy.”
Strengthening the Nigerian National Minimum Wage
Addressing the economic pressures currently squeezing the middle class, Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed that the legislature is focused on tangible relief.
He noted that the 10th National Assembly understands the “rising costs of living” and is actively working to ensure the Nigerian National Minimum Wage reflects modern realities.
“The 10th National Assembly recognizes the challenges workers face, from rising costs of living to workplace demands,” Akpabio remarked. “I assure you that the Senate remains unwavering in its commitment to legislating for a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of labour.”
He pointed to recent legislative successes as proof of this trajectory: “The passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and the implementation of workers’ welfare packages are testaments to this commitment.”
Prioritising Workers’ Welfare Packages
In his address, Akpabio did not just speak to the employees; he issued a direct call to action for those in positions of power. He argued that national prosperity is impossible without a motivated and well-compensated workforce. This focus on workers’ welfare packages remains a cornerstone of the 10th Senate’s legislative agenda for May Day 2026.
“As we mark this May Day, I urge employers in both public and private sectors to prioritise the welfare of workers. A motivated workforce is the foundation of national productivity and prosperity,” the Senate President urged.
A Partnership for Future Growth
Concluding his message, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised organised labour for their “constructive engagements.” He pledged that the Senate would maintain a close partnership with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to ensure legislation continues to protect the common man.
“On behalf of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I salute your courage, celebrate your contributions, and pledge that we will not relent until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity, and confidence,” Akpabio concluded.
