Nigeria’s vibrant heritage has once again taken centre stage as a powerful engine for economic growth. In a significant move for Nigeria tourism development, the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has joined forces with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

The collaboration aims to leverage the nation’s recent top ranking in a global Reputation Perception index to attract international visitors. Industry leaders agree that authentic heritage remains the ultimate foundation for building a sustainable visitor economy.

Unlocking the Reputation Perception Index

The nation clinched the top spot in cultural assets among several global metrics. These benchmarks were deployed by the NIPR through the Nigeria Reputation Management Group (NRMG) to assess how the country is viewed globally. Dr Ike Neliaku, President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the NIPR, shared these insights while hosting an official tourism delegation.

Dr Neliaku firmly agreed that local traditions form the bedrock of sustainable growth. He revealed that the unique expressions of the Nigerian people scored the highest among the seven key pillars used by his institution to measure the country’s national standing. The data clearly shows that international audiences find the nation’s musical exports, culinary arts, and historic festivals highly appealing.

A Fresh Cultural Tourism Narrative

During the high-level meeting, Dr Neliaku praised the vision of the tourism delegation. He specifically commended the Director General of the NTDA, Mr Ola Awakan, for using compelling storytelling to promote the country’s vast travel potential. He noted that national identity and visitor appeal are closely linked and cannot be separated.

The public relations expert stated that his institute will work hand in hand with the tourism authority to reshape the cultural tourism narrative. He also urged citizens at home and abroad to act as positive brand ambassadors for their homeland.

“Tourism is a soft power of influence that we must take full advantage of and I will like to charge NTDA to always be at the forefront of setting the agenda especially when engaging celebrities and influencers who have the capacity to run with wrong narratives about the country”, he opined.

Driving Nigeria Tourism Development via Public-Private Links

Mr Ola Awakan thanked the public relations institute for hosting the strategic session. He emphasised that the country holds a central position in Africa’s broader development. He also noted that public relations professionals are essential to achieving these national goals.

The Director General highlighted new digital tools designed to showcase the country’s attractions to global travellers. Speaking during the visit, Awakan said:

“We have dedicated platforms to tell our stories like NITOUREY which will be commissioned by Mr. President soon and we will continue to engage the private sector through viable PPP initiatives to ensure sustainability”.

By shifting focus toward asset-backed campaigns, the partnership aims to convert positive data into real economic gains. The combined efforts of these two bodies could mark a turning point in how the nation markets its heritage to the world.
