Spanish football has been thrown into mourning and concern following two frightening on-field incidents involving players in the country’s second division, with the tragic death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel and a serious head injury suffered by Nigerian midfielder Quadri Liameed raising fresh questions about player safety.
The incidents, which occurred just days apart, have attracted widespread attention across the football community, particularly after De Miguel died at the age of 30 following a collision during Tenerife’s encounter against FC Andorra.
The latest incident involving Liameed, who plays for CE Sabadell, occurred during his team’s 2-1 defeat to Albacete on October 31. The Nigerian midfielder was knocked unconscious after receiving a powerful kick to the head during a challenge for the ball.
Although the two incidents are unrelated, their proximity has intensified concerns about the dangers footballers face during competitive matches.
Jesús de Miguel Dies Following On-Field Collision
Spanish football was left devastated on Tuesday, November 3, following confirmation of the death of Jesús de Miguel.
The 30-year-old Tenerife striker suffered a serious medical emergency during his team’s second-division encounter against FC Andorra on Monday, November 2.
The incident occurred during stoppage time when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his area to clear a long ball but collided with De Miguel, striking him in the chest with his knee.
The striker immediately collapsed, prompting players from both teams to urgently call for medical assistance.
Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch and worked to stabilise him before he was transported to hospital by ambulance.
Despite the emergency response, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and subsequently died on Tuesday morning.
His death sent shockwaves across Spanish football, with CD Tenerife confirming the heartbreaking news and expressing condolences to his family, teammates and supporters.
The Spanish National Police subsequently opened judicial proceedings following his death, a procedure required under Spanish law when a death is considered non-natural.
The incident also resulted in the abandonment of the match, which had been level at 2-2.
Nigerian Midfielder Quadri Liameed Knocked Unconscious
Just days before the tragic news surrounding De Miguel, another frightening incident had occurred during a Spanish second-division fixture involving Nigerian midfielder Quadri Liameed.
The 24-year-old was playing for CE Sabadell against Albacete when he received a powerful kick to the head in the 42nd minute.
Albacete forward José Corpas attempted to strike the ball during a challenge but accidentally connected with Liameed’s head.
The Nigerian midfielder immediately collapsed and briefly lost consciousness, leaving players and officials visibly concerned.
Medical personnel from both clubs rushed onto the pitch to attend to him. He was subsequently fitted with a neck brace, carried away on a stretcher and transported to hospital by ambulance.
Corpas received a straight red card for the dangerous challenge, although reports indicated that the contact was accidental.
Albacete eventually secured a 2-1 victory despite finishing the encounter with 10 players.
Positive Update as Quadri Liameed Leaves Hospital
Fortunately, the latest information surrounding the Nigerian midfielder has provided some relief.
CE Sabadell confirmed that Liameed had been discharged from hospital after medical examinations returned positive results.
The midfielder regained consciousness following the incident and was reported to be in a stable condition.
His father, Hajji Gafar, also provided an encouraging update, expressing relief over the medical team’s assessment of his son’s condition.
He disclosed that Liameed was expected to undergo a Buffalo Concussion Bike Test within 48 hours to further assess his recovery.
The news offered some reassurance to Nigerian football supporters following the frightening scenes witnessed during the encounter.
Spanish Football Faces Difficult Days
The two incidents have placed Spanish football under an uncomfortable spotlight.
While football naturally involves physical contact, the incidents have highlighted how quickly an ordinary challenge for the ball can develop into a serious medical emergency.
Following De Miguel’s death, the Spanish Football Federation announced the postponement of Tuesday’s scheduled matches. UEFA also announced that moments of silence would be observed at its matches during the week in his memory.
However, there has been no announcement that the entire Spanish second division has been suspended.
The football community continues to mourn De Miguel while hoping for a complete recovery for Liameed.
For Nigerian supporters, the positive news about the Sabadell midfielder is particularly encouraging. Nevertheless, the tragic loss of De Miguel serves as a painful reminder of the importance of immediate medical intervention and player safety.
Spanish football will now be hoping for calmer days as clubs, players and supporters come to terms with two deeply distressing incidents.
