Democrats won control of Congress in the US midterm elections 2026. The result is a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump’s first two years of this term. The president’s party usually loses ground in midterms, but this Republican defeat was unusually large. Five factors explain it.

Key takeaways

– Democrats now control Congress after the US midterm elections 2026.

– Inflation and the Iran war were the dominant voter concerns.

– Hispanic and Black voters swung back towards Democrats.

US Midterm Elections 2026: Soaring Living Costs Fuelled Voter Anger

Rising prices dominated the campaign. Inflation reached 3.7% in the year to September, driven by fuel and energy costs. Diesel in early October was close to its September record of $6.52 a gallon. Voter polls found 79% of voters said inflation had caused their household moderate or severe hardship, and more than six in 10 blamed Trump’s policies.

US Midterm Elections 2026: The Unpopular Iran War Hurt Republicans

The US-Israeli war on Iran, launched in February, pushed prices higher. Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global oil and LNG supplies. Some 63% of polled voters said military action was the wrong decision, and 74% called the war a major factor in their congressional vote. Many Trump supporters saw it as a betrayal of his “no new wars” pledge. Trump acknowledged the war’s role but said he had to stop Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

US Midterm Elections 2026: Democrats Ran a Disciplined, Local Campaign

Democratic candidates kept to a message on living costs and healthcare, even in Republican strongholds. Former teacher James Talarico in Texas and pastor Adam Hamilton in Kansas spoke openly about their faith. In South Carolina, former paediatrician Annie Andrews pulled off an upset on health-cost concerns. In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff won comfortably in a state Trump carried twice. Trump himself said Democrats “did a good job. Republican Ken Paxton, by contrast, was criticised for a campaign that strayed from voters’ concerns.

Prices and the war were both tied directly to the president. His approval had slipped even among Republicans, leaving states that backed him in 2024 exposed. Trump urged supporters to treat the vote as if he were on the ballot, a gamble that appears to have backfired. Polls showed voters wanted him to focus on prices, yet his final rally speech dwelt on a Washington renovation project.

US Midterm Elections 2026: Hispanic and Black Voters Swung Back

Gains among these groups helped Trump win in 2024, but the shift reversed this year. Democrats won all three House seats in heavily Hispanic districts along the Texas-Mexico border. A New York Times analysis found majority-Hispanic counties moved over 22 points against Republican Senate candidates compared with 2024. Pew Research found 56% of Americans view ICE unfavourably. Majority-Black counties also moved towards Democrats. Mississippi’s Senate race is on a knife-edge, and Democrat Scott Colom would be the state’s first Democratic senator since 1982 if he wins.

What happens next

With Congress in Democratic hands, the White House faces new scrutiny of its agenda. Trump’s response over the coming days will show how he handles the Republican defeat.
