Professor Kingsley Moghalu: The Rising Of A Visionary Nigerian

PROFESSOR Kingsley Moghalu is a global leader who has made contributions to the stability, progress and wealth of nations, societies and individuals across such domains as academia, economic policy, banking and finance, entrepreneurship, law and diplomacy.

He is the Founder and President of the Institute for Governance and Economic Transformation (IGET), a new think tank based in Abuja, and the Distinguished Non-Resident Fellow at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA where he was on the full-time Faculty as Professor of International Business and Public Policy from 2015-2017. He also is the Founder of Sogato Strategies LLC, a global strategy, risk and macroeconomic advisory firm, and is a member of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) High Level Intergovernmental Expert Group on Financing for Development.

As Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009-2014 he led the implementation of far-reaching reforms in the Nigerian banking system after the global financial crisis. He was a Member of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee that brought inflation down into single digits during his tenure.

Prof. Moghalu served as Chairman of the Boards of Directors of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) and the Financial Institutions Training Centre. He also was a member of the Boards of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the global Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI). He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) in London, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Opportunities Industrialization Centers International, Inc. in Philadelphia, USA, from 2006-2010.

Kingsley previously worked for the United Nations for 17 years at duty stations in New York, Cambodia, Croatia, Tanzania and Switzerland. He rose to the highest career rank of Director and led successful work in accountability and regulatory reform as a Member of the high-level Redesign Panel on the UN Internal Justice System appointed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006 (at the political level rank of Under-Secretary-General) at the request of the UN General Assembly. The Redesign Panel overhauled the accountability and dispute resolution framework for the 60,000 – member staff and management of the UN worldwide. Kingsley also successfully led senior UN assignments in national reconciliation and nation-building in fractured societies in Asia, Africa and Europe, and raised billions of dollars for social investments in developing countries by The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria in Geneva, Switzerland.

A visionary interdisciplinary thinker and thought leader, Kingsley is the author of several books including Build, Innovate and Grow (BIG): My Vision for Our Country (published in February 2018), the critically acclaimed Emerging Africa: How the Global Economy’s ’Last Frontier’ Can Prosper and Matter, Global Justice, and Rwanda’s Genocide. He is a sought-after international keynote speaker and a frequent commentator in the global media including CNN, BBC World TV, Bloomberg, and the Financial Times.

A philanthropist, Kingsley founded the Isaac Moghalu Foundation (IMoF), a non-profit organization, in memory of his deceased father Isaac Moghalu, one of Nigeria’s pioneer Foreign Service Officers in the 1960s. IMoF empowers youth and women in disadvantaged communities through literacy, education, skills-building and leadership development.

Kingsley was educated at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he obtained the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). and M.Phil. degrees; The Fletcher School at Tufts University where he obtained the M.A., University of Nigeria, Nsukka (LL.B.) and the Institute of Risk Management in London, UK. He also is an alumnus of executive education programs in economic transformation, global leadership, corporate governance, strategy, and macroeconomic management at Harvard Kennedy School, The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard Business School, and the International Monetary Fund Institute.

He is the recipient of several honors including the Nigerian national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB), and the Honorary Doctorate degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) Honoris Causa awarded him by Anambra State University. Kingsley is married to Mrs. Maryanne Moghalu, a lawyer, ex-banker, and the Executive Director of the Isaac Moghalu Foundation. The couple have four children.
