The Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Suleiman Muhammad, has confirmed that 10 persons were killed and scores displaced in some parts of the Girei Local Government Area of the state by a flood.
He told our reporter in a phone chat that the incident happened in Jabbi Lamba town, Girei Local government areas and its environs during the Thursday torrential rainfall.
According to him, six corpses have been recovered while four others are yet to be recovered.
He explained, “The disaster is not unconnected to torrential rainfalls which lasted over 15 hours across the state. Six corpses have been recovered while four others are still missing. The natural disaster led to the hospitalisation of three kids after a building collapsed on them in the town.”
He stated that his agency has issued a distress call to the National Emergency Agency and other humanitarian organisations, adding that an assessment team was dispatched on Friday to visit affected communities and assess the level of damage caused by the flood.
REPORTERS AT LARGE had earlier reported that six people were feared dead with over 400 houses and 700 farms submerged following a flood that wreaked havoc in 15 Cross River communities.
The flood, which occurred as a result of a downpour which lasted for about five days, took over the affected communities destroying rice, yam and cassava farms, economic trees, household items and schools worth millions of naira.
