Tensions have flared in Oyo State as Governor Seyi Makinde faces fierce criticism from the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation over allegations surrounding the proposed sale or allocation of Cheshire Home Land in Eleyele, Ibadan, to private developers.
While the campaign group warned the state administration against disposing of the property—describing the move as part of a troubling pattern of converting public assets for private commercial use—the Oyo State Government dismissed the claim as speculative, misleading, and politically motivated.
Government Rejects Cheshire Home Land Allegations as Politically Motivated
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, said the allegation was designed to create unnecessary anxiety among residents. He insisted that the administration remains committed to transparency, due process, and the protection of public interest.
Olanrewaju described the statement from the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation as another attempt to distort the government’s record, adding that the group had failed to provide any concrete evidence to support its claims.
The government spokesman also linked the campaign organisation’s statement to its reaction following a recent radio interview granted by the Oyo State gubernatorial candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Honourable Bimbo Adekanmbi.
Seyi Makinde Administration Defends Track Record on Public Assets
He maintained that the Makinde administration has consistently demonstrated its commitment to responsible asset management and infrastructure development since assuming office in 2019. According to him, the state has invested significantly in rehabilitating schools, hospitals, road networks, security infrastructure, and other public facilities across all zones.
Olanrewaju stated that every decision regarding state property, including any discussion around Cheshire Home Land, remains guided by due process and the developmental needs of the population.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Makinde fully understands that public assets belong to the people of Oyo State. Every decision taken by his administration regarding government land and property is guided by due process, public interest, and the developmental needs of the state,” the statement said.
The government spokesman further accused critics of remaining silent while public assets suffered neglect under previous administrations, insisting that residents can easily distinguish between genuine public concerns and political opportunism. He added that the governor would not be distracted by baseless allegations or attempts to politicise routine governance.
Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation Raises Alarm Over Property Sale
Earlier, the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation raised alarm over the reported plans involving the Cheshire Home Land, warning that disposing of strategically located public property deprives future generations of essential services.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Bisi Oladele, the organisation argued that public land should never transfer to private commercial interests without transparency, public consultation, and compelling justification.
The group maintained that government assets must be preserved for future needs, including schools, healthcare facilities, recreational centres, and social welfare institutions, particularly as population growth drives up demand for public infrastructure.
The campaign team also questioned the wisdom of selling off state holdings when incoming administrations will inevitably require land to expand essential civic services.
“What will be left for future generations if every strategically located public property is converted into a private estate, shopping complex or commercial development?” SSACO asked.
Growing Oyo State Government Property Controversy Sparks Demands for Transparency
Consequently, the organisation demanded an immediate halt to any contemplated sale or allocation of the Cheshire Home Land to private developers. It called for the highest standards of transparency and accountability in all transactions involving state-owned property.
However, the state government urged opposition political groups to engage in responsible public debate, stressing that criticism of official policy must rely on verifiable facts rather than political speculation.
This latest Oyo State Government property controversy has brought renewed scrutiny to asset management practices across the state. While opposition leaders demand greater oversight and public disclosure, government officials maintain that all decisions conform strictly to the law and serve the broader public interest.
