The family and friends of Emmanuel Danladi have formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Tunji Disu, demanding a fresh investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding his passing.

The move follows the reported closure of the case by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Oyo State Police Command. The petitioners have labelled the decision to end the probe as “hasty and unsatisfactory.”

Tragedy at Iyaganku Police Barracks

Emmanuel Danladi, the 20-year-old son of Inspector Akaso Danladi, was an aspiring scholar who had recently gained admission to study Computer Science at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko. His life was cut short during a fire at Block 14 of the Iyaganku Police Barracks in Ibadan on 22 December 2025.

The blaze reportedly began in the early hours of the morning, at approximately 4:45 a.m. While initial reports suggested an accident, the family maintains the timeline remains shrouded in controversy.

Unanswered Questions and Allegations of Arson

According to the petitioners, several critical elements of the case were overlooked before the authorities declared the file closed. The family alleges that signs pointing towards “possible arson, murder, and homicide” were not adequately examined by the initial investigators.

The petition raises several disturbing questions regarding the morning of the fire:

  •  The Locked Door: The family questioned why the deceased was allegedly locked inside the apartment, a move that prevented any chance of escape.
  • The Freezer Explosion: Concerns were raised over a reported explosion involving a freezer. The family has demanded clarification on what was stored inside the unit by the suspect’s mother.
  • Missing Evidence: The petitioners queried the actions of a key suspect who allegedly left the apartment in possession of the deceased’s mobile phone.

A Plea for Justice and Accountability

The family maintains that the sequence of events leading to the fire has not been established with any degree of certainty. They describe the incident as one riddled with inconsistencies that require the urgent intervention of the highest police authorities.

In their appeal to IGP Tunji Disu, the family stressed that a comprehensive probe is essential to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the fire.

The petitioners stated: “A thorough probe would help ensure accountability and strengthen public confidence in the justice system. Reopening the case is necessary to ensure that the death of the deceased does not go in vain and that justice is served.”

As the community awaits a response from the Force Headquarters, the call for transparency grows louder. For the Danladi family, this is not merely a legal matter—it is a quest for the truth behind the tragic loss of a young man on the cusp of his future.
