The Enugu State Government has confirmed a dog rabies outbreak in the Igbo Etiti Local Government Area. Officials are now warning residents about the high fatality rate linked to this viral disease.

High Fatality Risk in Igbo Etiti

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, shared this news in a public notice on Tuesday. He urged the public to use extreme caution. According to the commissioner, rabies is a highly fatal viral disease. It affects both animals and humans. It moves mainly through the bite or saliva of infected animals, especially dogs.

The state government warned that the disease is almost always fatal once clinical signs appear. Because of this, the ministry has started several measures to stop the spread.

Measures for Pet Owners and the Public

The government issued clear guidance to contain the Enugu rabies outbreak. The official notice stated:

“All dog owners and pet keepers are urged to vaccinate their animals against rabies without delay. Pet owners have been directed to confine their animals and prevent them from roaming freely in public spaces. Members of the public are cautioned to avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals within the local government area.”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation also shared a medical plan for those exposed to the virus. Quick action and rabies vaccination are vital for safety.

The statement read: “Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap under running water for at least 10 minutes and seek urgent medical care at the nearest health facility.”

Residents must report animals showing aggression, excessive drooling, odd behaviour, or paralysis. You should contact the nearest veterinary authority.

Ubru assured the public that the Veterinary Services Department is working hard. They are collaborating with partners to protect public health alert zones. Community leaders must also help by teaching residents about the dangers. The ministry noted that awareness is a key tool in saving lives.
