Manchester United were denied a valuable Premier League victory after Everton produced a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.

United looked set to leave Merseyside with all three points after taking the lead twice during an entertaining second half. However, Everton refused to give up and found a last-gasp equaliser through Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The result leaves Manchester United with four points from their opening three Premier League matches, while Everton remain unbeaten after three games.

Mbeumo Gives Manchester United the Lead

After a goalless first half, Manchester United finally broke the deadlock shortly after the restart.

Bryan Mbeumo produced an excellent finish in the 46th minute, curling the ball into the corner to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The goal gave United renewed confidence and appeared to put Michael Carrick’s side in a strong position to claim their second victory of the campaign.

Everton, however, responded with greater attacking intent as they searched for a way back into the contest.

Everton Fight Back Through Tyrique George

The hosts eventually got their reward in the 83rd minute. Substitute Tyrique George found the back of the net to bring Everton level at 1-1, setting up a tense final few minutes.

With momentum shifting towards Everton, United needed to regain control quickly. Instead, the visitors responded almost immediately.

Sesko Restores United’s Lead

Manchester United regained their advantage in the 88th minute through Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenian striker rose to meet a cross from Luke Shaw and headed the ball into the net, putting United 2-1 ahead with only minutes remaining.

At that point, it appeared that Sesko’s goal had secured a dramatic away victory for Manchester United. But Everton had other ideas.

Maitland-Niles Scores Stunning Late Equaliser

The biggest moment of the match arrived deep into stoppage time. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, making his Everton debut, produced a spectacular strike in the 96th minute to level the score at 2-2. The late goal sparked huge celebrations inside the stadium and completed an incredible comeback for David Moyes’ side.

For Manchester United, it was a painful way to lose two points after leading twice.

For Everton, the result demonstrated the team’s resilience and ability to keep fighting until the final whistle.

Manchester United Miss Chance to Build Momentum

The draw will leave United frustrated. After suffering defeat against Hull City in their opening league fixture, Manchester United responded with an impressive 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.

A win against Everton would have given Carrick’s team an opportunity to build momentum and move further up the Premier League table.

Instead, United had to settle for a point despite twice being in front.

The defensive problems will also be a concern. United have now conceded multiple goals in each of their three away league matches, highlighting an area that the coaching staff will need to address.

Everton Remain Unbeaten

While Manchester United will see the result as two points dropped, Everton can take plenty of positives from the draw.

Moyes’ team showed considerable character after falling behind twice. Tyrique George’s equaliser gave the hosts hope, while Maitland-Niles’ stoppage-time strike completed the comeback.

Everton have now collected five points from their first three league matches, maintaining their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Premier League season.

The result could also provide confidence to a squad that has undergone considerable changes during the transfer window.

What the Result Means for Manchester United

Manchester United leave Hill Dickinson Stadium with four points from their first three Premier League games.

Although there were positive moments in the performance, conceding a late equaliser will raise questions about the team’s ability to manage games when holding a narrow advantage.

Carrick will now have to find a way to turn promising performances into consistent results.

United have shown that they can score goals, but defensive consistency remains an obvious concern.
