Nigeria will start paying outstanding wage awards to federal civil servants before mid-August to ease mounting industrial tension.

The Ministry of Finance confirmed the timeline following high-level talks in Abuja between government officials and trade union representatives on Wednesday.

Reconciliation of the cash accounts is now complete, bringing thousands of state employees closer to receiving promised allowances delayed during recent fiscal restructuring.

Officials also confirmed that administrative processing has resumed for multiple batches of backdated promotion arrears.

Federal Civil Servants Set for Cash Relief to Stem Rising Economic Pressure

The decision to clear these arrears highlights the growing pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to cushion workers against severe economic headwinds.

Following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, headline inflation in Africa’s most populous nation has severely eroded the purchasing power of state employees.

For months, federal civil servants have faced sharp increases in transport, food, and housing costs while waiting for temporary relief packages promised by the state.

Delays in releasing these targeted allowances have repeatedly threatened to break the fragile peace between the government and organised labour unions.

By committing to a firm mid-August deadline, government strategists hope to head off potential strike actions that could paralyse key public services and further disrupt economic output.

The move reflects a clear policy shift toward administrative transparency as a tool to maintain public order and retain public sector productivity.

Ministry Officials Finalise Cash Allocations Ahead of Mid-August Transfer

Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, assured union leaders during Wednesday’s meeting that administrative approvals were almost complete.

“When government makes commitments, it delivers. We are not in the habit of making promises that cannot be fulfilled. Where there are outstanding issues, we will give realistic timelines and ensure they are implemented,” he said.

Oyedele stated that officials have been directed to accelerate action across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to resolve outstanding matters affecting federal civil servants promptly.

The trade side of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC), led by National President Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, had earlier warned that unresolved pay issues were straining industrial harmony.

Minjibir urged the ministry to expedite payments for promotion arrears and address salary relativity concerns affecting public healthcare workers.

Reassuring the workforce, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Raymond Omachi, stated that approved funds would be released without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.

Addressing specific administrative delays, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, revealed that Batch 7 promotion arrears—which had been inadvertently omitted during an earlier payment run—are now being processed alongside Batch 9.

Danjuma added that inter-ministerial teams are simultaneously reviewing unresolved claims surrounding the Peculiar Allowance.

Director of Cash Management, Christiana Osho, confirmed that financial reconciliation for the wage relief measures had been completed successfully.

Osho stated that actual cash transfers to federal civil servants would commence immediately after the final treasury release is authorised this month.
