“While we grieve this great loss, we are grateful to God for the gift of his life, the memories we shared, and the legacy he leaves behind. His impact will forever remain in our hearts and in the lives of everyone who knew him,” the statement added.

The Six-Decade Legacy of Kola Oyewo

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Kola Oyewo was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated theatre practitioners. His distinguished career spanned over six decades. He began his acting journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and rose to prominence through his exceptional performances on stage and screen.

He became widely acclaimed for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic African tragedy, The Gods Are Not to Blame, written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi. His deep understanding of the character solidified his status as a master of his craft.

Throughout his illustrious career, the veteran Nigerian actor featured in several iconic productions. These included Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story. His brilliant work earned admiration from audiences across generations.

Academic Contributions and Cultural Impact

Beyond entertainment, Dr. Kola Oyewo made significant contributions to academia. He obtained a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan. He lectured at several higher institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University. He also served as a former Head of Department of Theatre and Media Arts at Ekiti State University.
Through his teaching, mentorship, and scholarship, he nurtured generations of actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and researchers. He left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s creative and educational sectors.

His passing comes only months after he celebrated his 80th birthday. The occasion attracted tributes from across the country, including from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.

News of his death has continued to generate reactions from colleagues, former students, cultural enthusiasts, and admirers. They remember him as a towering figure in African theatre, a custodian of Yoruba culture, and a passionate advocate for artistic excellence.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
