The Nigerian entertainment industry and academic community have been thrown into mourning following the death of Kola Oyewo.

The veteran Nigerian actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and theatre scholar passed away at the age of 80. His demise marks the end of an extraordinary era in Yoruba theatre and film. However, his remarkable body of work, commitment to cultural preservation, and massive influence ensure that his legacy will endure for years to come.

His son, Oyewo Adetoyese, announced his demise in an emotional statement on Friday. He described his father as a man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched countless lives.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father, Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo. He was a wonderful man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched the lives of many,” he said.

While expressing gratitude for the life and legacy of the deceased, the family appealed for prayers and support during this difficult period of mourning.

The Six-Decade Legacy of Kola Oyewo

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Kola Oyewo was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated theatre practitioners. His distinguished career spanned over six decades. He began his acting journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and rose to prominence through his exceptional performances on stage and screen.

He became widely acclaimed for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic African tragedy, The Gods Are Not to Blame, written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi. His deep understanding of the character solidified his status as a master of his craft.

Throughout his illustrious career, the veteran Nigerian actor featured in several iconic productions. These included Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story. His brilliant work earned admiration from audiences across generations.

Academic Contributions and Cultural Impact

Beyond entertainment, Dr. Kola Oyewo made significant contributions to academia. He obtained a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan. He lectured at several higher institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University. He also served as a former Head of Department of Theatre and Media Arts at Ekiti State University.
Through his teaching, mentorship, and scholarship, he nurtured generations of actors, playwrights, filmmakers, and researchers. He left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s creative and educational sectors.

His passing comes only months after he celebrated his 80th birthday. The occasion attracted tributes from across the country, including from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.

News of his death has continued to generate reactions from colleagues, former students, cultural enthusiasts, and admirers. They remember him as a towering figure in African theatre, a custodian of Yoruba culture, and a passionate advocate for artistic excellence.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
