Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has asked Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of past leaders as the nation marks Nigeria Independence Day. Speaking during the 66th anniversary gathering at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, Seyi Makinde insisted that national unity remains essential despite economic and security pressures across the country.
Represented by Deputy Governor Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, the governor spoke under the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing.” He urged citizens to protect democratic values and treat the nation’s diverse ethnic heritage as a practical strength rather than a point of conflict.
Governor Makinde said: “We must appreciate our heroes past for what they did to achieve and attain independence in 1960. Independence was earned through their sacrifices and countless struggles. The freedom we enjoy today is a result of their labour.
“As we reflect on our nation’s journey since 1960, we must acknowledge the challenges we face in all ramifications. As a state, we also have our own challenges in Oyo State. This day calls for sober reflection on the issues confronting us at both the national and state levels. But we must also appreciate that independence teaches us—at both national and state levels—how to govern ourselves. And we cannot govern ourselves without upholding the rule of law and the tenets of democracy.”
Security and Amotekun Corps Oyo State Capabilities
Addressing regional safety concerns, the governor highlighted ongoing security interventions across the state. He noted that the established Amotekun Corps Oyo State framework continues to yield clear results through close cooperation with conventional security agencies.
The administration maintained that active community involvement forms the backbone of its strategy to prevent crime and protect rural communities.
Highlight of Oyo State Achievements Since 2019
Reviewing his tenure, Makinde pointed to steady progress across key sectors including healthcare, education, sports, and road infrastructure. He explained that intentional project distribution ensures all five zones—Oke-Ogun 1 and 2, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa, and Ibadan—receive direct public investments.
Governor Makinde noted: “Since 2019, when this administration was elected, we have achieved feats and progress in all spheres of life: education, security, sports, business, and infrastructure.
“In terms of security, we have put in place a robust arrangement through the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which works collaboratively with other security agencies to maintain peace in Oyo State. On infrastructure, we have spread development across the five zones of Oyo State; Oke-Ogun 1 and 2, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa, and Ibadan. People attest to the fact that this administration has done a yeoman’s job in expanding infrastructure: education facilities, road networks, Light Up Oyo State, hospitals, and more.”
Notable Oyo State achievements cited include the expansion of the Light Up Oyo State project, modernised school facilities, upgraded hospitals, and reconstructed regional transport routes that continue to spur business growth across the state.
A Call for Peaceful Coexistence on Nigeria Independence Day
Concluding the ceremony, Makinde congratulated residents and urged peaceful co-existence to secure lasting progress across Nigeria.
The event featured a parade, cultural performances, and prize presentations. Dignitaries in attendance included Oyo State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi, Chief Judge Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima, Head of Service Dr. Adenike Fashina, Youth and Sports Commissioner Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes President-General Barrister Ajeniyi Ajewole, service commanders, traditional rulers, and senior government officials.
