A three-day public servants warning strike has commenced in Nigeria to protest against severe economic hardship and the rising cost of living.

Organised under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), the industrial action unites federal, state, and local government employees who are pressing urgent JNPSNC cost of living demands.

The nationwide strike, which runs from Friday, 2nd October, through Sunday, 4th October, follows repeated calls on the authorities to cushion the daily financial burden on civil servants.

Key Demands Behind the Public Servants Warning Strike

Union leaders outlined clear conditions required to end the impasse and resolve the crisis. Chief among these requests is a reduction in the price of petrol to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award for all government workers, and the swift commencement of new national minimum wage negotiations ahead of 2027.

In a formal circular issued on 1st October 2026, signed by JNPSNC National Secretary Olowoyo Gbenga, the council explained that members had no choice but to take action. The union stated that the strike became necessary following the Federal Government’s failure to respond to requests sent directly to President Bola Tinubu on 21st September 2026.

The circular said, “The strike shall start with effect from Friday, 2nd October, 2026, to Sunday, October 4th, 2026.”

Union officials reaffirmed that public sector staff across all three tiers of administration must down tools to draw attention to the deepening financial distress faced by families nationwide. The council confirmed that the action will proceed as planned without interruption over the weekend.

NLC Petrol Price Reduction Calls Support JNPSNC Stance

Lending strong support to the action, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) endorsed the warning strike while reiterating urgent demands for a lower fuel price, financial relief for workers, and fresh minimum wage talks. Labour leaders warned that unbridled inflation has virtually destroyed the purchasing power of average households.

In an Independence Day address, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasised that immediate interventions are vital as citizens grapple with soaring transport fares, expensive food items, rising house rents, and costly school fees. He specifically attributed the severe cost-of-living crisis to petrol price hikes following the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023.

“Petrol now sells at N1,430 per litre or higher in major cities and far more in remote areas. The surge in transportation costs drives up the prices of food, school fees, rent, and nearly every necessity of life, while nominal wages remain stagnant,” the NLC said.

The congress maintained that the Federal Government must break the link between fuel costs and broader inflation to afford citizens any meaningful relief.

“Without cutting this chain, any effort to ease the suffering of the people is futile,” it said.

Demands for Economic Reforms and Wage Adjustments

Beyond fuel pricing, the NLC demanded the immediate rollout of a nationwide wage award covering federal, state, and local public servants. The union described the payout as a necessary emergency measure to address declining real incomes rather than a charity hand-out.

Labour leaders further accused authorities of failing to honour tax relief measures agreed upon in the October 2023 Memorandum of Understanding. Consequently, the union urged the government to deliver promised tax cuts, reduce the cost of governance, increase transparency, and invest heavily in public infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, and schools.

The NLC questioned why savings from the fuel subsidy removal have not translated into better public services or domestic refining capacity. It also linked widespread economic hardship to rising youth unemployment, forced migration, and lingering national insecurity.

Looking ahead to the political landscape, the congress declared that workers will assert their independence ahead of the 2027 general elections. The union warned against voter intimidation and religious division, adding that it will use its proposed Workers’ Charter to evaluate political policies and candidates while refusing to be treated merely as an electoral tool.
