Plateau State Diphtheria Outbreak Forces Immediate School Shut Down

In response to a growing diphtheria outbreak Plateau State health officials are taking urgent action to safeguard children and communities. Following a formal directive issued by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, authorities have ordered the temporary shutdown of all primary and secondary schools across the region. This crucial Plateau school closure order forms part of wider Nigeria public health preventive measures designed to halt the transmission of the disease in high-risk local government areas.

The Plateau State Government has directed the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, effective Monday, September 7, 2026, as a preventive measure against a diphtheria outbreak. The decisive directive, issued under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, follows the alarming detection of suspected cases in Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa Local Government Areas.

Understanding the Diphtheria Outbreak Plateau State Faces
Public health emergencies demand swift, decisive leadership to prevent full-scale community transmission. Diphtheria, a severe bacterial infection affecting the throat and upper airway, poses a grave threat to children and young adults if left unmanaged. By shutting down academic institutions at the earliest warning signs, the state government aims to break the chain of infection across affected local councils.

According to a statement signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, on Saturday, schools that have already resumed academic activities are also required to shut down from Monday and remain closed until further notice.

The state government’s quick intervention reflects a proactive strategy. The temporary suspension of learning environments ensures that health teams can conduct contact tracing, isolate potential cases, and carry out necessary decontamination protocols without risking the safety of pupils or school staff.

Enforcing the Plateau School Closure Order Across All Distrits
The scope of the mandate covers every educational facility operating within the borders of Plateau State. Government officials have emphasized that compliance is non-negotiable for both government-owned and private institutions to guarantee public safety.

The commissioner urged school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply fully with the order and ensure that pupils and students stay safely at home.

Education administrators and regional inspectors are expected to monitor compliance closely across Jos North, Wase, Jos South, Bassa, and surrounding zones. Parents are advised to strictly restrict their children’s social interactions during this period, reinforcing the isolation strategy required to curb bacterial spread.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang Implements Precautionary Measures
State leadership remains focused on managing the healthcare crisis transparently while minimizing long-term disruption to academic calendars. The government’s immediate priority is safeguarding human life while medical teams assess the epidemiological situation across affected local government areas.

She said the measure was aimed at protecting the safety and wellbeing of students and teaching and non-teaching staff during the period.

“The Government appreciates the understanding and full cooperation of all stakeholders as it continues to take appropriate measures in the best interest of the people of Plateau State,” the statement read.

Expanding Nigeria Public Health Preventive Measures and Next Steps
Containing bacterial infections of this scale requires active cooperation between government agencies, healthcare professionals, and civil society. While the school closures serve as an immediate firewall, public health teams are mobilizing door-to-door awareness campaigns, strengthening clinical surveillance, and equipping local hospitals to handle potential cases.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any symptoms associated with diphtheria—such as sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and respiratory distress—to the nearest primary health center immediately. Through strict adherence to official health guidelines, civic responsibility, and transparent government action, Plateau State aims to contain the current threat swiftly and resume normal academic operations safely.
