A devastating Shreveport mass shooting has left a community in deep shock after a father killed seven of his own children and one cousin in a horrific act of violence. The event, which police have officially classified as a domestic violence tragedy, unfolded early Sunday morning, forever altering the lives of families in this Louisiana neighbourhood.

Shreveport Mass Shooting: The Sequence of Events

Police reported that the violence began at approximately 05:00 local time. After targeting the children at a property, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. Officers initiated a high-speed pursuit, eventually locating and killing the gunman in a neighbouring district.

“We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations,” said Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon in a news conference earlier on Sunday.

Two adult women, including the children’s mother, remain in critical condition following the assault. In a desperate bid for survival, one child managed to escape the home by jumping from the roof; they were subsequently rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Identifying the Victims

The Caddo Parish coroner’s office confirmed the tragic loss of eight young lives. The victims were three boys and five girls, ranging in age from three to 11. They were identified as Jayla Elkins, 3, Shayla Elkins, 5, Kayla Pugh, 6, Layla Pugh, 7, Markaydon Pugh, 10, Sariahh Snow, 11, Khedarrion Snow, 6, and Braylon Snow, 5.

Neighbours expressed total disbelief at the scale of the horror. Mack London, 71, told NBC News he had lived in the area for decades and that “nothing like this has ever happened on this street”.

Investigating the Domestic Violence Tragedy

While official motives remain under investigation, family members have pointed toward a volatile separation. The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, reportedly struggled after his wife sought a divorce.

Elkins’s brother-in-law, Troy Brown, told the Washington Post that he lived with the attacker, and that Elkins had been upset after his wife requested a divorce. “After the first argument about the divorce, he acted like he was losing his mind,” he told the newspaper.

Crystal Brown, a cousin of one of the wounded women, confirmed the couple were separating and were scheduled to appear in court on Monday. “He murdered his children… he shot his wife,” she said.

Impact on Louisiana Crime Report Trends

This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since January 2024. According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which tracks nationwide gun violence statistics, this event represents a staggering spike in local crime.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the event as “maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport”. Addressing the wider impact, he noted: “We have hurting families, we have hurting police officers, coroners’ personnel. This affects the entire community, so we all mourn with these families.”

Local councillor Grayson Boucher highlighted the broader implications for the city, noting that domestic-related incidents account for a significant portion of local murders. “We’ve more than doubled our homicide in the city of Shreveport because of one act of domestic violence,” he said.

State and federal officials have also responded to the grief. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry stated he and his wife were “heartbroken over this horrific situation, and we’re praying for everyone affected”. US House Speaker Mike Johnson added: “We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
