How Taofeek Arapaja Defection Upended Seyi Makinde’s 2027 Run

To launch a viable presidential campaign in Nigeria, a governor must first command absolute control over his home state. Without a secure home front, projecting strength to external national coalitions is nearly impossible. For Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, that foundational home front just shattered. The high-profile defection of Amb. Taofeek Arapaja—a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State and senior party stalwart—to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fundamentally fractured the regional vote bank that Makinde relied upon to fuel his national ambitions.

The Strategic Battle for the Ibadan Voting Base

Oyo State politics is fundamentally dictated by Ibadan, an electoral heavyweight containing 11 local government areas and over 50% of the state’s total voting population. To win Oyo, you must win Ibadan.

Amb. Arapaja is a native of Idi-Arere in Ibadan, a former local government chairman, and a former House of Representatives member. He is widely regarded as one of the region’s premier grassroots mobilisers. By pulling his loyal structure into the APC fold, Arapaja has directly split Makinde’s core Ibadan voting base in the state’s most critical electoral zone.

Regional Repercussions for Seyi Makinde

This move leaves Makinde’s newly adopted platform, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), isolated in the South-West. Amb. Arapaja taking his exit means that established regional networks, party executives, and mobilisers across the zone have shifted their allegiances to the APC. Without this pan-Yoruba institutional backing, Seyi Makinde lacks the regional leverage required to project strength to northern and eastern political blocs.

This local friction has massive national consequences. Makinde is currently attempting to build a formidable third-force coalition alongside northern heavyweights like Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. However, in national politics, your seat at the table is determined by the number of votes you can guarantee from your home state.

Local Alliances and National Ambitions in Oyo State Politics

With Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, actively working against Makinde’s chosen APM successor, now faces a highly competitive, multi-party war right at his doorstep. If Seyi Makinde cannot guarantee a clean sweep of Oyo State’s massive voter turnout, his political stock drops significantly when negotiating with external power blocs.

Arapaja’s alignment with the central power grid was solidified during high-level meetings in Abuja with President Bola Tinubu. With the backing of the presidency, local APC heavyweights have capitalised heavily on the momentum.

Reshaping the Narrative Across the Ibadan Voting Base

In Ibadan South-East, apex APC leader Alhaji Mufutau Adisa Gbayawu organised a passionate reception for the returning politician, themed “Son Returning Home.” Rather than letting detractors frame the defection as opportunistic party-switching, the APC leadership has masterfully reshaped the narrative around Amb. Arapaja. They have framed his move as a natural return to his core progressive family, invoking his late father’s historical ties to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s legendary progressive bloc.

As the road to 2027 intensifies, Makinde faces the uphill battle of rescuing a fractured home front while the APC charges forward with an insider who knows exactly how to dismantle the governor’s regional machinery within Oyo State politics.
