Following an altercation between students and residents of Iwameje, the school administration has closed the university’s host town, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), in the Ijagun area of Ogun State.
According to a statement released Sunday afternoon by the institution’s registrar, Dapo Oke, the clash caused violence in the neighbourhood and damaged property.
According to reports, the conflict began on Friday when locals in one of the host villages allegedly attacked a 300-level student they believed to be a cultist.
He allegedly was rushed to a hospital but was later declared dead.
According to Channels Television, members of his organisation went on the rampage and set fire to the community leader’s buildings as well as other homes that were used as student hostels.
Soldiers and police officers have been policing the area to get it back to normal.
According to the university registrar, the university management announced its closure “following the recent clash between Students and members of the University Host Community in the early hours of today, particularly the Iwameje Community, which led to the eruption of violence.”
Parents and guardians are thus instructed to promptly bring their wards home, especially those who reside in and around Iwameje.
He mentioned that, in conjunction with law enforcement officers, attempts were being made to restore the impacted community’s peace and order.
