Security forces, including troops, police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have taken over the popular Yankalli Market, one of Plateau State’s largest commodity markets, following an attempt by hoodlums to break in and steal food and other necessities.
According to the Daily Trust, the hoodlums, who included both men and women, arrived at the market around 8:00 p.m. on Friday but were stopped by security personnel stationed in expectation of an attack.
Alhaji Jamilu Kabiru, chairman of a traders’ group, verified the development, claiming they had already informed security services.
He stated, “We had heard on Thursday that hoodlums from Gangare, Rikkos, and other places would attack the market to loot food items because we sold the commodities at a high price.” We did not take the rumour lightly and immediately reported it to the security agencies, who promptly intervened. We had to sleep with our eyes open at the market to stay vigilant for security.
“We are not the cause of inflation. The price rise is not because of us. Our goods are always bought from companies. The increase is always from the companies. In addition, when you buy commodities from Lagos, you have to hire a truck for a price of over two million naira. What you spend on transporting the commodities to your destination, is divided by the number of commodities, and that’s how the price is increasing. It is not our fault. We want people to understand that.
“In our market, we centrally control the price of goods. It is a competitive market where everyone is struggling to sell and bring in new goods. People should please understand with us.”
DSP Alabo Alfred, a spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the development, saying, “We received the information early, and with the help of certain persons in the market, we were able to suppress the effort. The Area Commander directed the operation, which was a success.
