The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has described the Ogbomoso Cradles Carnival as a commendable initiative to strengthen Yoruba cultural values and traditions.
Speaking on Thursday at his Lagos residence while receiving members of the Ogbomoso Cradles Carnival planning committee, including Mr. Gbite Adegoke and Bashorun Akinwole Akinwale, Adams praised the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, for spearheading the initiative.
He lauded the monarch’s efforts to promote culture, foster unity among Ogbomoso indigenous peoples, and boost the local economy.
“Initially, I was sceptical about a pastor becoming king, but Oba Olaoye has proven his commitment to strengthening the traditional institution,” Adams said.
His efforts in uniting Ogbomoso and connecting with other Yoruba monarchs are highly commendable. He must not relent.”
Adams also expressed joy over Ogbomoso’s renewed focus on its cultural heritage. He highlighted the town’s pivotal role in Yoruba history, noting its significance in the Oyo Empire as a city of warriors and a producer of three Aare Ona Kakanfos, two of whom were also Souns.
“Ogbomoso’s heroes, who sacrificed their resources, time, and energy to protect the Oyo Empire from invasions, deserve to be celebrated, not just mentioned in history. Honouring their bravery will uplift their spirits and bring blessings to Ogbomosoland,” Adams said.
In his remarks, Mr. Gbite Adegoke outlined the objectives of the five-day carnival, which forms part of Oba Olaoye’s 25-year development plan for Ogbomosoland.
He appreciated Aare Gani Adams for his efforts in promoting culture and complements on the carnival and Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye. “We shall be glad to have you in Ogbomoso for the event,” he concluded.
Ogbomoso Cradles Carnival, which was part of Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye’s efforts to revive and promote the rich cultural heritage of Ogbomosoland, is scheduled to take place in Ogbomoso from December 19–23, 2024.
