American Open University Nigeria has secured regulatory clearance to launch three postgraduate degree programmes featuring embedded artificial intelligence instruction.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) confirmed the accreditation decision in an official communication dated 19 June 2026, signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Mr Abubakar M. Girei. The approval authorises full-time enrolments for Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Information Technology (MIT), and Master of Public Administration (MPA) degrees starting in the 2026/2027 academic session.

The regulatory clearance followed a resource verification assessment by an expert panel evaluating physical facilities, academic governance, and institutional resources at the campus of American Open University Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“This approval is the outcome of a rigorous, independent examination of what we have built: our faculty, our facilities, our systems, and our academic governance,” Prof. David S. Akanbi, PhD, Founder and President of American Open University, said.

He added: “We are grateful to the Commission for its thoroughness and for the confidence this approval represents.”

Higher Education Shifts Towards Embedded AI Standards

The regulatory decision for American Open University Nigeria reflects a broader shift across West African tertiary accreditation, moving beyond traditional academic frameworks toward technical integration designed for rapid industrial changes.

Unlike conventional university structures where emerging technologies are taught as isolated electives, the institution has built artificial intelligence directly into every core module. The framework aims to address a growing skills gap across public and private sectors in sub-Saharan Africa, where traditional curricula frequently lag behind modern technological demands.

“We believe AI is not a feature to be bolted onto traditional curricula. It is a force reshaping how organisations decide, deliver, govern, and compete,” Prof. Akanbi said.

“Our programmes are designed accordingly, with AI integrated into every course and three signature specialisations in each programme that prepare graduates to lead in the domains where AI is advancing fastest.”

The approved specialisations cover several technical, managerial, and administrative disciplines:

Specialisation Streams

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA): Technology Entrepreneurship; Human Capital Development; Strategic Educational Design.
  • Master of Information Technology (MIT): AI Engineering and Deployment; Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics; Intelligent Learning Systems.
  • Master of Public Administration (MPA): Digital Governance and Security; Public Health Policy and System Governance; Strategic Public Sector Leadership.

Flexible Delivery Models in Modern Tertiary Education

The newly accredited degree tracks at American Open University Nigeria utilise a flexible delivery model that allows students to alternate between on-campus lectures in Ibadan and digital learning environments. Known as the HyFlex system, the structure targets working professionals seeking advanced qualifications without abandoning full-time employment.

Academic delivery rests on the university’s institutional model, termed the EDGE Framework (Educate, Develop, Grow, Empower), which standardises course delivery and practical research criteria across all departments.

“These are master’s programmes designed to stand alongside any in the world and to graduate global leaders,” Prof. Akanbi said. “Our graduates will leave A-Global ready to lead AI-driven transformation in their organisations and communities, with the strategic tools, technical depth, professional networks, and applied research capability the moment demands.”

The regulatory decision marks a key step for private higher education in Nigeria, where authorities are increasingly looking to flexible and technology-supported models to expand access for university applicants.
