The Southwest Development Commission (SWDC) has formally kicked off its operations with a clear vision to unlock the economic potential of the Southwest region.
At its inaugural Board meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, the commission outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at driving infrastructure development, fostering industrialization, and promoting human capital development across the six states of the Southwest.
A New Era of Development
The SWDC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), Dr. Charles Akinola, declared that the commission is “set for full take-off” and is determined to deliver on its statutory mandate in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Akinola emphasized that the commission’s establishment is a landmark intervention by the President to address the developmental challenges of the region in a coordinated, strategic, and sustainable manner.
Southwest Development Commission: One Bloc Development Agenda
The commission’s strategy, dubbed the “One Bloc Development Agenda,” aims to harmonize initiatives into a unified framework for regional growth. This approach will enable the SWDC to pool resources, coordinate efforts, and ensure that the Southwest speaks with one voice in terms of development priorities. According to Akinola, this will attract large-scale investments and foster collaboration among states in the Southwest.
The MD/CEO called on all stakeholders, including state governments, private sector leaders, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations, to support the commission’s vision. “The success of the SWDC cannot rest on the Board alone. We need the full cooperation of our governors, legislators, business leaders, community stakeholders, and indeed every citizen of the Southwest to bring this vision to life,” he said.

With a strong leadership team in place, including Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi as Chairman and a diverse Board of Directors, the SWDC is poised to make a significant impact on the region’s development. As the commission embarks on this noble journey, it is expected to play a crucial role in driving economic growth, reducing poverty, and promoting inclusive development in the Southwest region.
