Manchester City's 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford

Manchester City produced a remarkable defensive performance to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, surviving more than an hour with 10 men to claim victory in a dramatic Manchester derby.

Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in the second half after Phil Foden had been sent off, turning what looked like a difficult afternoon for City into a memorable away win.

United had the numerical advantage for most of the match and created several opportunities, but City refused to surrender their lead after Haaland’s 60th-minute strike.

Foden Red Card Turns Derby on Its Head

The game took a dramatic turn in the 23rd minute when Phil Foden was shown a red card following an incident involving Bruno Fernandes.

City were suddenly reduced to 10 players with the majority of the match still to play.

At that point, United appeared to have the perfect opportunity to take control.

Playing against 10 men at home normally puts enormous pressure on the team with fewer players, and United immediately looked to exploit the extra space.

For United, the challenge was simple: turn the numerical advantage into goals.

They could not do it.

United Hit the Woodwork

Manchester United had chances to punish City after the red card.

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hit the woodwork, coming agonisingly close to putting the home side ahead.

Those missed opportunities would eventually prove costly.

City were under pressure, but United’s inability to finish their chances kept the visitors alive.

Gianluigi Donnarumma also played an important role between the posts, making saves when United threatened to find an equaliser.

The longer the game remained level, the more confidence City appeared to gain.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Haaland Gives 10-Man City the Lead

With City down to 10 men, Erling Haaland produced the quality his team needed.

The Norwegian striker found the net in the 60th minute after receiving a delivery from Joško Gvardiol.

The goal initially appeared to have been ruled out for offside, leaving City supporters waiting anxiously for the VAR review.

After checking the incident, VAR overturned the decision.

United defender Patrick Dorgu had played Haaland onside, allowing the goal to stand.

Suddenly, City had the lead.

United Fail to Capitalise on Numerical Advantage

The remaining minutes became a test of United’s attacking patience.

The home side pushed forward, knowing that a defeat against 10-man City would be particularly damaging.

But City’s defensive organisation continued to frustrate United.

United moved the ball around in search of an opening, but clear chances were difficult to come by.

When opportunities did appear, the finishing was not good enough.

That became the story of the afternoon for United: chances were created, but the final touch was missing.

Donnarumma Helps City Hold On

As the pressure increased towards the final whistle, Donnarumma became increasingly important.

The goalkeeper produced a late save to deny United and preserve City’s narrow advantage.

City knew that conceding a late equaliser would erase all the work they had done since Foden’s dismissal.

When the referee ended the contest, the City players celebrated a victory that had looked far from certain when they went down to 10 men.

Haaland Adds Another Derby Goal

Haaland’s goal was not just the winner. It also added another impressive statistic to his Manchester derby record.

The striker has now scored nine goals in Manchester derbies, continuing his strong record against United.

His ability to produce decisive moments in major matches remains one of City’s biggest strengths.

City Maintain Perfect League Start

The victory is particularly significant because it keeps City’s perfect start to the Premier League campaign intact.

Manchester City moved to 12 points from four matches, keeping them level with Arsenal at the top of the table on points and behind only on goal difference.

Winning away against Manchester United is impressive enough.

There is still a long campaign ahead, but results like this can provide significant momentum.

Another Difficult Result for Manchester United

For United, the defeat is a frustrating one.

The loss leaves Manchester United with only four points from their opening four Premier League matches, adding pressure to Michael Carrick and his squad.

The biggest concern is not simply losing the derby.

It is the manner of the defeat.

Manchester Is Blue Again

The Manchester derby once again belongs to City.

It was not a comfortable victory, and the scoreline was nowhere near a rout.

But in terms of drama, resilience and importance, it was a huge result for the visitors.

They played more than an hour with 10 men.

United hit the woodwork twice.

Still, Haaland’s goal separated the teams.

Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City.

For City, it is three points, a clean sheet and another derby victory.

For United, it is another reminder that opportunities must be taken when they arrive.
