Prof. Bolanle Awe Pioneer of Feminist History

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, has described Prof. Bolanle Awe’s past works as a significant contribution to feminist history.

The VC stated that Mama Awe, through her emphasis on women’s rights and capacities, guided the nation, continent, and the world towards a deeper understanding of gender justice and equity.

Professor Adebowale stated this when the conveners of the ‘Prof. Bolanle Awe at 90’ conference paid him a courtesy visit in his office on Monday.

The VC remarked that Prof. Awe mobilised people and resources to create the Women Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC) at the University of Ibadan.

The leader of the visiting team and the Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos, Prof. Olufunke Adeboye, thanked the VC for the warm reception. She informed the VC that the 2-day conference was an intellectual gathering to celebrate Mama Awe at 90 with many scientific papers to be presented in several panel sessions.

The two-day conference was put together by the University of Texas, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Lagos.

Other team members were the Head, the Department of History, UI, Prof. Rasheed Olaniyi; Director, WORDOC, UI, Dr. Sharon Adetutu Omotoso; and Brand Manager, Mr. Olusegun Olapade.
