A devastating Benue State attack has claimed the lives of four mobile police officers and eight residents, following an aggressive Ayilamo bandit invasion early Friday morning. The heavily armed group struck the agricultural hub in the Logo Local Government Area, firing indiscriminately at terrified families and razing scores of residential properties to the ground.

The latest atrocity underscores a rapidly deteriorating Benue security crisis, as regional authorities struggle to protect vulnerable agrarian settlements along border corridors.

Local accounts indicate that the assailants—estimated at over 200 men—entered through the Alufu access road from neighbouring Taraba State. Advancing swiftly towards the heart of Ayilamo, situated on the crucial Abinsi-Tyulen-Anyiin-Wukari transit route, they unleashed heavy gunfire before igniting homes across the township.

Desperate Resistance Amid the Logo Local Government Area Assault

A tactical unit of mobile policemen deployed to guard the community mounted a fierce defense. However, the law enforcement officers faced an overwhelmingly superior force armed with military-grade weapons.

Local resident Tyolumun Ugande spoke to journalists in Makurdi to describe the horror of the prolonged battle:

The gun battle lasted several hours from Thursday night before the bandits eventually retreated.

Ugande confirmed that search parties discovered the bodies of four police officers in the surrounding bushland on Friday morning. Search teams located eight additional civilian bodies amidst the smoke and ruins of burned homes.

Repeated Violence Highlights the Growing Ayilamo Bandit Invasion Threat

This tragic bloodshed marks the second time within thirty days that security forces stationed in Ayilamo have suffered lethal casualties. The community has endured constant psychological and physical siege from armed groups seeking control over the fertile countryside.

James Udough, another resident who survived the horror, recounted the relentless nature of the violence:

“The bandits have been trying to set the whole of Ayilamo ablaze for more than two years now. We call on security personnel, the Benue State Government and the Federal Government to help secure our land and lives.”

Mineral Rumours and Escalating Benue Security Crisis Motives

Community members suggest that the persistent campaign of violence involves more than simple territorial expansion or cattle grazing disputes. Local sources allege that the persistent attacks could be connected to rumours of the existence of large mineral deposits in and around Ayilamo.

If true, these commercial interests represent an ominous escalation in the conflict’s underlying dynamics. Unregulated exploitation of natural wealth often fuels long-term instability across rural Nigeria, drawing heavily armed criminal syndicates seeking to displace native inhabitants.

State authorities have yet to clarify the official death toll or announce new tactical deployments. When contacted regarding the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue State Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, said he would issue a statement on the incident but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

The massacre at Ayilamo serves as a stark reminder that federal and state security strategies require urgent re-evaluation. Without sustained tactical garrisons, rural agricultural populations remain completely exposed to well-armed militias.
